Trying to figure out the exhaust routing had discouraged me. The torsion bars seemed to make using the 2.5" exhaust hard to fit with my ordinary tools. I looked into coilover setups to eliminate the torsion bars but that will cost serious cash. I spent a few days this past weekend figuring it out.

I was able to tuck it high and tight to the frame and clear the bars. The trans crossmember was the next hurdle. I considered cutting the x-member and welding in 4" tube to shoot the exhaust through. Instead, I found this offset tubing that will work perfectly.

Gonna remove the cab and bed to powerwash the frame and finish the exhaust. Would love to end the exhaust with a dual center exit like the JEEP SRT8's.

^ You and I think alike. I'm considering the oval exit also. In fact, the same company (Spintech) that sells the offset tubing sells oval exhaust tubing. I'd like to have the dual oval exit through the rollpan and cut flush to it.

are you wanting to run duel exhaust? did you think about going to a "y" and running a single larger pipe and split it in the back?

I'm going with a dual in / dual out cross flow muffler. This will let me have a true dual exhaust design.

I picked up a 88 supra IRS a few weeks ago. The plan is to cut out the rear frame section from a pickup in the junkyard. I will use it as a jig to figure out how I will mount it. I want to install it without cutting /sectioning the oem frame. I think the obstacle will be the truck frame to upper control arm clearance during the suspension travel.

Installing the IRS will require me to redo the exhaust again. Would like to route the exhaust under the IRS like the new range rovers.

The only thing about running under the IRS is clearance. Already that suspension is low to the ground. If you are wanting to lower the rear at all then it might come into place. Also if you hit any bumps or even put something in the bed of the truck (you said you wanted a parts truck out of this thing) than the rear crossmember will already be close to the ground. Now add suspension tubing under it.

When I swap my rear IRS (the Lexus SC400 front and rear suspension is exactly the same) Ill be running the exhaust over the IRS. Just like it is stock.

^ I know it will be close but I'm not slamming the truck. I may be OK but I'll work it our IF/When I get there. Also, i'm pretty sure the exhaust on the sc4/3 running under the IRs. That's how it runs on my Cressida, Supra and LS400. I'd be surprised to see the SC400 be different.

    A little more progress.

    Trans looks good
And all Lexus rear drive cars run exhaust under the IRS
Makes room for gas tank and rear passenger seating

I may pick up a LS400 IRS. Two of them in a pick n pull with everything on it. The 1UZ's are untouched.

Oh I guess I am misstaken then.

Have you changed out the starter yet? Seeing how much of a pain in the ass it will be to fix when its in the car it might be a good idea to swap it out for a new one while the engine is out.

Oh and did you cover what you did for the tranny swap? I must have missed what you used. Also what tranny are you going with?

I had a shop rebuild the starter for $50. He replaced the contacts and bearings. I have been running the w58 from a 82-84 celica. I do have a w58 (steel center plate) from a sc300 but I want to save it for another project. The celica w58 gearing is SOOOO much better than the original 4 speed. The celica trans can't hold alot of power but the truck can't get enough traction to break anything anyway. The shifter location on the celica trans is the same as the original truck trans which makes things easier.

I do have a spare celica trans just incase and I'll pick up a MA70 supra trans as a backup soon.

Yeah man. 1uz's are a dime a dozen here. Have seen another complete VVti 1uz at a local yard but someone butchered the harness and the ignition key was missing.

Did you set the motor in the same location as the 22r or did you move it forward or backwards depending on shifter location?

I bolted the transmission and installed the engine/trans using the original trans mount as a reference. The 1uz engine brackets ended up very close to the location of the frame motor mounts. I expect that some company will offer 1uz mounts for these trucks soon. The passenger side fire wall had to be slightly massaged to clear the head. The brake booster was slightly massaged to clear the valve cover. It's very difficult to install the engine with the brake booster in place.
