i was looking at that one

hey 93yoter, i went to start up the truck (12AM) but its really cold outside, which means my block is also cold. but i started up and i cant hear the same loud rattle. i took a video also. could it be my valves needing adjustment also? When i drove earlier today (warm motor of course) i can easily hear this rattle. So i have two theories, timing chain drivers side guide, or the valves. i'll take valve cover off after school tomorrow, will give you an update on the what not. as for pulling off the cover, i'll take my finger, press against teh chain on teh drivers sign. if it has more slack that finger size, that means busted guides right? and as for valves, how do i adjust them? thanks!

your engine is going to sound crappy all time with incorrect valve adjustment

a timing chain eating into your timing cover is going to sound almost like bad valves but it will go away at certain rpm, certain loads on the engine, and temps. Ie when it's cold your chain is not going to have much slack and will not be hitting the cover. If you pull off the valve cover put a flash light down the driver side of the chain and just below the head you should be able to see the guide.

$20, the guide comes here on Tuesday, it's drivers side... definetly.. wayy too much slack. well the truck is grounded for now.

but my dad is willing to pay for that and the window (<that comes on thursday) (about $85 something in total)

you cant just order the guides man, you have to order the whole kit.. the guide is bad because the chain is bad... you are looking at like a 100 bucks to fix this yourself.. and this probably isnt something you can do yourself... not an easy task...

also why would you bother taking the entire motor apart to replace a plastic piece.. replace as much as you can and save yourself the hassle of doing it all over

you are going to have to take off a lot of stuff just to get to that guide so you need to do the entire kit at once.

lc's kit comes with nothing more than engnbldrs kit but like all lc stuff it's waaay overpriced

i'm getting engnbldr's kit, good point to do it all at once, figured it was cheaper than Toyota's too, kit wise.

i'm going to drop the pan also, but i need to do this with the motor in the truck

Can anyone help me do this? DIY instructional wise? so far i know i will need to drain teh oil, drop the pan, and what else is there needed to do this? plus i stil have clutch fan...

bro im telling you, find someone who knows what the hell they are doing, you will screw yourself over if you dont have good help... Im telling this to you from my own past stories...

your going to need off the top of my head.
    torque wrench
    timing gun/light
    tons of sockets and wrenches
    pulley pullers
    haines manual
probably a ton more but I cant think right now...
also gunna have to change your oil and rad fluid so theres another 50 bucks in liquids right there

why go with engnbuilder ? go to advance auto.. their kit is the same almost and cost like 60 bucks and you get it that day.. no shipping b/s... and yeah lc is way over priced.. but they have to be because there really is no market with the things they are selling.. as much as we all want crate engines from them for our yotas most of us cant afford it

back on topic.. burn I think you should go LS1..

went to the junkyard today. i found a few things of interest.

    1. 87 supra 7m-gte w/ 5 speed manual, missing turbo and various other pieces

    2. 87 supra 7m-ge w/ auto, various pieces missing

    3. 95 lexus sc300 2jz-ge w/ auto, complete motor i believe

    4. another lexus w 2jz, nothing but block and pistons whole top end gone.

i'm thinking about pulling the 2jz even though its not the 7m-gte i want. maybe i could sell it to get a 7m motor. my wife told me i should, and i thought it was pretty cool when i called her and said "i found a 7m-gte motor but its missing pieces", and she replied "thats good, was there any turbo 2jz's there"? it was pretty awesome. i can get the 2jz for around $120, do you guys think i should get it? here is a pic.
