The 22R is carburated. The 22RE is fuel injected (EFI). The block is the same.

btw, I posted pics of the show. There's a thread in off topic.

Standard horsepower is better on the 22RE than the 22R, but carbs are easier to tune (as my car-junkie cousin says). The carbs on the basic 22R are mostly tuned to comply with emissions. Cali sucks when it comes to that.

They won't give as much power because the standard carb is somewhat restrictive. LC makes great carbs is what everyone else is saying, but it sounds like they're not as good for the environment. Forgive me, I am not great with carbuerators.

I know there's a Taco ext cab, but he wasn't there. He should be at the show in May.

Back in high school a friend of mine had a '77 Celica GT Liftback with a rebuilt 22R with Weber carbs, it was badass!
    I did find this:
    20R, 2190cc displacement, 8.4:1 compression, 96 hp
    22R (Carb), 2367 cc disp, 9.0:1 compression, 100 hp
    22RE (EFI), 2367 cc disp, 9.4:1 compression, 116 hp

The 22R looks killer with the sidedraft carbs, like this
    [IMG]
But, I think that if you're looking for more power stick with 22RE.

well, right off the bat you're getting 16 more hp with the RE. Plus you can either turbo or supercharge the RE.

The other thing you should take into consideration is , like 88 mentioned, emissions. They're getting more strict everyday. You could get away cause the year of your truck, but I believe everything from 1994 up is fuel injected. I do love the looks of the 22R with sidedrafts. It performs well too.

What if you rebuild it? And I could be wrong on this, but I believe you can just remove the intake manifold and carburate it. You might check on that tho

hey at least he still drives a yota product!

i would just rebuild it, much cheaper than buying a new one. the head i put on my 88 (efi from a 91) was from a 87 carbed engine and everything bolts right on. i would imagine it could go the opposite way. and living in cali i would stick with the re since you can't pass smog with a weber.
