Toyota 2WD rear axle, gearing and transmission info

    I know these questions have come up a few times so figured id post some of the info i know or have come across... if you have a list of known toyota 2wd 3rd member gear ratios and what models and/or years they came out of please post. keep in mind this is for 2wd drivetrain only!

    Axle Widths:

    73-78 ~ 53" pre-hilux and stouts

    79-83 ~ 55" hilux / 1st gen pickups

    84-88 ~ 57" 2nd gen

    89-95 ~ 58.5" 3rd gen

    95-04 ~ 60" tacoma


    Axle 3rd member ratios:

    8" 5 lug 2wd - 3:07 all 6lug 4wd 8" 3rd's will also bolt on to this axle housing. these rear ends can be found on all 4-speed manual 4-cylinder trucks. identifying marks for this axle can be found in the center of the drum mounting surface. there are 4 lines that run opposite of each other.

    7.5" 5 lug 2wd - 3.30, 3.54, 3.88, 3.90, 4.30, 3.72, 3.58, 3.72, 3.56, 3.73........ most of these depended on your options.... tranny, wheel and tire sizes, motor size, etc.... most commonly identified with 2 straight line marks found on the center of the drum mounting surface.

    2wd Transmissions:


    W40


    4-speed transmission offered in base model vehicles.

    Ratios:
    * First Gear: 3.287:1
    * Second Gear: 2.043:1
    * Third Gear: 1.394:1
    * Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
    * Reverse: -4.091:1

    Applications:
    * 1971-1975ish Toyota Celica

    W42

    4-speed transmission.

    Ratios:
    * First Gear: 3.579:1
    * Second Gear: 2.081:1
    * Third Gear: 1.397:1
    * Fourth Gear: 1.000:1
    * Reverse: ?

    Applications:
    * 1980s toyota pickups and ?

    W45

    Little information is available for the W45 but service documentation from around 1980 lists it as being the 4-speed variant of the W55. It was used in Toyota RWD cars from around the same year.

    The W45 was comprised of all aluminum alloy.

    Ratios:
    * First Gear: 3.566:1
    * Second Gear: 2.056:1
    * Third Gear: 1.384:1
    * Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
    * Reverse: -4.091:1

    Applications: ~1980 RWD Toyota Cars

    W50

    Often called the "steel-case" transmission for its steel shell, in contrast to the later W-series transmissions' aluminum case.

    Ratios:
    * First Gear: 3.287:1
    * Second Gear: 2.043:1
    * Third Gear: 1.394:1
    * Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
    * Fifth Gear: 0.853:1
    * Reverse: -4.039:1

    W51

    Came in early 80's CE71 Corolla wagon. Similar ratios as W52 except 5th

    Composition is alloy.

    Ratios:
    * 1st gear 3.625
    * 2nd gear 2.043
    * 3rd gear 1.394
    * 4th gear 1.000
    * 5th gear 0.802
    * rev gear 4.039

    Applications:
    Toyota Corolla E70 jdm CE71/CE72 wagon behind 1C 1839cc diesel.

    W52

    Used in Australian delivered 2WD SR5 Extra-Cab Hilux (YN57)

    Composition is steel.

    Ratios:
    * First Gear: 3.625:1
    * Second Gear: 2.043:1
    * Third Gear: 1.394:1
    * Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
    * Fifth Gear: 0.853:1
    * Reverse: -4.039:1

    Applications: 1984-1988 2WD Hilux (AU)

    W55

    This was the first of the aluminum-shelled W-series transmissions.

    The W55 appears to be a base reference point for gear ratios that Toyota used to fine tune later models of the W-series.


    Ratios:

    * First Gear: 3.566:1
    * Second Gear: 2.056:1
    * Third Gear: 1.384:1
    * Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
    * Fifth Gear: 0.85:1
    * Reverse: -4.091:1

    Applications:
    * 1982-1983 Toyota Carina
    * 1981-1985 Toyota Celica
    * 1983 Toyota Corona
    * 1986 Toyota Soarer
    * 1986 Toyota Crown
    * 1983 Toyota Chaser
    * 1984-1988 Toyota Pickup 2WD with 22RE(EFI) engine
    * 2002-2005 Lexus IS300 (US Market only)

    W56

    A common truck transmission that came in 2-wheel and 4-wheel drive varieties.

    Its ratios differ in comparison to the base W55 in the 1st and 2nd gears only; this is to allow a slightly heavier vehicle (truck) to get up to speed slightly quicker than if geared like a car.

    This was most likely accomplished by taking the W55 base gears and changing the 1st and 2nd gear sets, as the rest of the transmission remains unchanged.


    Ratios:
    * First Gear: 3.954:1
    * Second Gear: 2.141:1
    * Third Gear: 1.384:1
    * Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
    * Fifth Gear: 0.85:1

    Applications:
    * Toyota Hilux
    * Toyota 4Runner

    W57

    It differs from the W58 only in its fifth-gear ratio.

    The W57 is sometimes designated as a "Close-ratio transmission", however in its stock form it does not meet all the criteria for a Close-ratio box.

    The ratio shift was accomplished by taking the W55 base ratios and changing the input shaft to intermediate shaft ratio by 7.9%, thus shifting 1,2,3 ratios higher by that amount (4th is direct 1:1).

    Unlike in the W58 the 5th/overdrive gear set was changed to create a smaller rpm drop between 4th & 5th gears so as to remain close to the overdrive ratio seen in the other boxes.

    The rest of the transmission remains unchanged.

    * First Gear: 3.285:1
    * Second Gear: 1.894:1
    * Third Gear: 1.275:1
    * Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
    * Fifth Gear: 0.861:1
    * Reverse: -3.768:1

    Applications:
    * 1983-1986 Toyota Supra MK 2 in certain non-US markets.
    * 1986 Toyota Crown
    * 1986 Toyota Cressida
    * 1982-1985 Toyota Celica (21R)

    W58

    This transmission is popular as a replacement for weak stock transmissions in other vehicles. It came in two varieties: the original found in the 1982-1989 non-turbo Supras, Celicas and Cressidas of the early 1980's; and the later version found in Mk3, Mk 4 Supras and Lexus SC 300s.

    Toyota lists a change from an alloy sandwich plate to a steel sandwich plate around 1989. The steel sandwich plate has some minor internal differences, and it is believed to be slightly stronger (some wider bearings, some wider gears, slightly different gear selection mechanism, etc.). In theory the all-alloy version of the W58 should be the exact same strength as any other all-alloy W-Series transmission. The steel plate version is considered much harder to find and worth approximately three to five times as much as an all alloy version.

    The ratios and bolt patterns remain the same regardless of the sandwich plate used.

    The W58 & W57 share the highest gearing and closest ratios (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th (direct)) of the stock W-Series transmissions.

    The ratio shift was accomplished by taking the W55 base ratios and changing the input shaft to intermediate shaft ratio by 7.9%, thus shifting 1, 2, 3 ratios higher by that amount. This also shifted the overdrive 5th gear higher by the same amount creating a wider and taller overdrive ratio.

    Toyota engineers have shown favor to the W58 over the rest of the 'W' series by including it in so many models and even building a stronger version for higher powered applications.

    * Reverse: -3.768:1

    Applications:
    * 1982-1986 Toyota MK 2 Celica Supra
    * 1986-1992 Toyota MK 3 non-turbo Supra
    * 1993-1998 Toyota MK 4 non-turbo Supra
    * 1986 Toyota Cressida
    * 1986 Toyota Soarer
    * 1982-1992 Lotus Excel
    * 1992-1997 Lexus SC300


    W59

    A common truck transmission, this was the successor to the W56. Like the W56, it came in both 2-wheel and 4-wheel drive versions.

    This model appears to have a combination of ratios used in older models of the W-series.

    * 1st and 2nd are low ratios like in the W56 for use to get a heavy vehicle moving.
    * 3rd ratio is the same as in the W57/W58 for a lower rpm drop between 3rd & 4th useful in high-speed acceleration.
    * 4th is direct 1:1 as per design in these boxes.
    * 5th seems to be the base W55 overdrive ratio.

    * First Gear: 3.954:1
    * Second Gear: 2.141:1
    * Third Gear: 1.275:1
    * Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
    * Fifth Gear: 0.85:1

    * Toyota Tacoma

    somethings wrong with the 8in ratio listing :shrug:

    i have both a 4:38 and a 4:10 8in 5 lug rear.


    wish i could fit a 8in 3:07 in my celica tho, id be able to hit 160 easy. :evil:


    only other bits i could add to that is:

    supra's also came with 7.5 (F code) LSD 82-85ish and a 8in LSD (G code) which can be transplanted into a 8in 3rd housing.

    also there is a ton of aftermarket available because of the 4x4 and supra crowd. dont be afraid to search for them, just keep in mind that all spines dont match but its not that hard to fix.

    yea...... i didnt include the 4:10 or 4:38 in there cus i think those were both stock 4x4 ratios. i think the 3:07's only came in the 2wd 4 speed trucks. im not sure about the dually 1 ton trucks though.... never found out what gearing they have although i know they use a 8" rear.....

    160 in a celica? :runaway: :looney: :lol:

    well, it depends. some people would try to sell a toyota for crack so ya know.

    haha. my 78 longbed 5 speed has a G082 code, so an 8" 4.10. i wanna find a 3.9 or 4.1 supra lsd if anybody has one. no 4.30, freeway revs already blow at 80+. lol.

    nah, its not that i dont belive you, its just that what i listed is what i know....... feel free to make any corrections or add to this list by any means :waytogo:

    btw the 8" listing was for 2wd ratios, i know there are tons more ratio's for the 4wd 8"...... 4:30's, 4:10, 4:56, 4:88's and i those are just the ones that come to mind :shrug:

    i think with my stomach and other parts of my body as well so no harm :D

    i dunno man......... sometimes i wonder if im worse off with toyota's ....... i tell ya its like an sickness when you are into the this much :looney: :lol:

    I may have a set for sale. It is still in my 2wd truck. They are Precision Gear name brand. Also have a posi in my truck:D How soon do you need it? PM me for more info.

    I was told that the older 70's G code 3rd's are not the same as the newer 81 and up G codes 3rd's and not swappable. Also I have seen a 2wd dually with the G667 code before. If any of you want a stout rearend then look for the G code 2WD trucks. They use the 30 spline axle shafts just like the 4WD trucks and you can use the 4WD 3rd's in it.

    I found some weird info. My axle code is A01A which was referenced as a later model code in other sites. Also my trans is a W55. My truck is manufactured 8/92. I thought the W55 ended in 1988.

    I checked the 3rd member I pulled out of the truck and it was 4.10 Now the pinion bearing went bad so I swapped another chunk in. Not sure of its ratio just yet. How do I determine if mine is a 7.5" or 8"?

    W55 was used all the way up to 95. The Taco's got the W59 behind the 2/3RZ engines.

    i am going to go with the w57 if i can find one and keep my butt gears i have 3.43's just going to put a lsd or somthing with the same gearing i love how it gets up atm

    I had a 86 duelly 4spd with 8'' 3.90:1 ratio lsd stock.I now have for my stout an 87 single wheel 1 ton w56 with a 8",4.30:1 rear end.I never drove one but a friend had one years ago and said it needed a sixth gear. I'm using a 28" tall tire so we'll see.

    i have a 93 toyota 2wd pickup.it says 1993 on the title.but on the plate on the driver side door it says the production date was in 1992 and it has a w55 code on the plate for the transmission.is that right???
