I have a 1975 Toyota pick up with the 20R. When the timing is set at 8 degrees the distributor is adjusted Into the distributor lock down bolt as far as it will go (up) and runs like crap. Loosen the locking bolt and spin distributor about halfway through the adjustable part and it smooths out. Any thoughts on this? Run it timed that fast? Is it just some motors? Do I need to move the distributor wires over one spot? Thanks
You need to find top dead center. Everything else will fall into place. Check your firing order. 20R is a bullet proof engine.
Lots of guys set timing by sound, in your case I wonder if your balancer is bad and the timing mark is off. As stated above, find tdc manually and mark your balancer, that will be actual 0 deg. If you’re unsure how to do this, step one is to pul #1 spark plug and the cap, turn the crank (19mm socket? It is on mine) so the rotor is close to #1, put a long screwdriver or similar in the plug hole and turn the crank until it’s between going up and going down, that’s tdc.
I did this. I ensured the timing marks were right. It still wants more timing than 8. Maybe I’ll adjust the Weber and see if that helps. Thanks
I didn't think of that Erwin. I replaced the points distributor with an electronic distributor, That is very possible. I'll check that. Thanks
Just for future reference. When you ask for troubleshooting advice state all the modifications you’ve made to factory original. I was leaning towards a jumped timing chain until you mentioned the distributor.
