Hey well, I need a LOT of help for my next project.... I want to keep it cheap as F*CK! Well, I need some formulas, numbers, and stuff... To start off, What should i do about my major rust issue... well not major as you would think but i think it is sand-able and paint-able... surface rust, heavy though.... What primers, sanding equipment should i use? Then I will need further help, but for now, I want to address the prepping... Pics to come tomorrow! More info to come tomorrow as well, keep it clean, i don't want major debating. 3M is good, but you gotta go DEEP in your pockets to buy that stuff...
POR(paint over rust) 15 would be your best bet to delete all rust. Goes right over rust and does some chemical reaction and bonds with the rust and you'll never see the rust again. Really expensive though I think it's about $30 for a quart...maybe more
Go to autobodytoolmart.com. They should have everything you need. My opinion, 3M is good but their sandpaper kinda sucks. Theres better and cheaper ones out there
Cheap paint job is rustoleum. I sprayed my Mazda with satin black for about $50. I bought about 4 quarts and thinned it 10% with acetone mixed it good an sprayed it. Came out nice for my first job
PICS AS PROMISED! DON'T HATE ON MY MILEAGE! The connector pictured here may seem odd, but I want to explain that this connector FAILED and the inner terminals melted and corroded, made my lazy ass go buy an alternator and I went nuts for 2 hours or so... I figured out this was the problem because it still wouldn't charge. I forgot how I figured this was the problem but the point is, is that this thing here was toasted! went to my parts truck and took it off and just cut the old connector off, matched it because they are different colored, and just put heat shrink to protect it from future corrosion. So yeah.... Later, the voltage regulator started to take a sh!t and I didn't feel like spending $40 on a new regulator and I had no time to wait on parts from rock auto, so I crossed referenced it and found out that a tercel also uses the same regulator... Certain yr model tercel though. Took a $2 trip to the junk yard, and lucky basterd! I found a Tercel! Swiped the regulator and the damn thing was practically new! Slapped it on my truck, no more charging problems ever since. the end. lol... by the way, it isn't soldered on, just twist tied with heat shrink! So that's the rust on top of the cab I'm working with. Moderate to heavy surface rust. The doors I'm not to worried about, I'll get better ones from somewhere. Same goes for the bed, I'll eventually get a better one. Fenders, hood, doors, bed and bumper will be replaced, pretty much just the cab will need work. Oh, and if someone could PLEASE hook me up with a bench seat or set of buckets, I would TRULY appreciate that! My sh!t is GONNEE!!!... Sitting on the frame of the seat SUCKS! I'm in Houston if anyone cares on GIVING ME *wink wink* a seat and just charge me for shipping!...
thanks man, that's OEM bumper... it's about 8 years old or so.... NO RUST ON IT! just where the hitch balls goes the inner part but its NOTHIN! thing is clean!
Do not use por15 on the outside unless you really like sanding cause you will be at it for days... good for hidden areas only ... otherwise many good suggestions so far. Rustoleum for me when mine runs.
You have a lot of work in font of you. All the rust must go before any product is put over it!! Once gone seal all with a good primer! Not rattle can stuff!
