There's a 86 2wd over here with that same 5VZ supercharged setup that went 12.75@115 at track. Do it!

dude go with the chevy, I have 3 to 5 friends that I could call right now and give me a free long block in running condition.. there are sooo many of them its not funny. They sell the mounts for them for 150 bucks. you can buy a used 5 speed for 300 bucks out of a camero. That what im planning on.. I had a ls2 6.0 I was going to put in but its just too much money for me right now so i sold it back to my friend...on a side note we just finished his 408 stroker, and it is the fastest car i have ever driven, and it weighs 4500 pounds...

So...... back to some original topic talk. im still wanting the v8, however now, i may just say screw it, and drop the earlier model 305 ford motor, or possibly consider the 350 chevy now. those two motor options are still the cheapest easiest transplant options i can see for this build. what do you guys think?

im gonna try to do this as easy of a way as possible...... considering wiring diagrams and other junk, a ford carb'd motor or chevy carb or CPI is about as simple to wire in as i can think of.

350 thoughts- as for the 350, im still on the fence if i would do an auto trans, or manual. with that, what would be my options as far as transmissions?? also.... what years would a 350 be ideal from? with this, im also thinking if i upgrade to the 8" 4 speed diff, ill be set fine with the nice high gearing and stronger pinion.

ford 302- still on the fence weather the efi be a good idea, or more hassle than its worth..... with the ford, i would probably do the t5 trans if i found it in a mustang, but a auto is likely gonna be the easiest thing to find available. mustang or explorer rear end is considered but dont think it be necessary....

A chevy small block will be a REALLY tight fit inbetween the distributor and firewall. But if you do go this route, get a later model vortec 5700, like a 95-02 suburban, truck or tahoe. They are roller motors, 1pc rear main seal and have very decent heads on them. Just get a 4bbl hi rise intake and a cam. Easy 300+ at the wheels.
Gen 1 SBC. Not the LSX motors (not that you cant, its just that they are big money motors). Like I said before, the 82-97 camaro/trans ams 5 speed transmissions will not survive behind a 350. You can make a 93-97 6 speed work with the correct flywheel and clutch setup. (out of a gen 2 LT1 car).
If you were to go auto. cheapest would be a TH350 3 speed. Strong, but no OD. Strongest is a TH400, but its heavy as hell and eats a bit of power. (I had 1 in my Z28). A 700R4 has OD and is popular, but they are garbage transmissions strength wise. (some people say you can "build" them. If you ever rebuild one and see how wimpy some parts are youll say different)

Now as far as the ford, its a pretty easy swap into a Toyoyo. The engine is physically smaller. Distributor up front. Narrower. Use 94-95 mustang front engine cover, water pump, belt setup, brackets, ect. Much skinnier than almost anything. Automatics you could run a 3spd C4. Butter easy to rebuild. Strong enough. C6 if you build a NASTY motor. 4spd AOD's can be build strong, but they EAT hp. (Had 1 in my 86 stang before I swapped to a 5spd.)

A 302 has a tough time breaking the World Class borg warner T5, even a hot motor with heads, cam, and intake. (usually around 300WHP with these good parts).

Personally I would do fuel injection. 20-25 mpgs with a good amount of power. What more could you ask for. But the setup is a PITA.

im gonna roll out to the junkyard and take a look at the options you gave me....... ill look and see how integrated the motors are and what difficulty i can see running one in there would be. like i said.... its my first actual motor swap, although it is not the cheapest option, for the amount of money it would cost me to bring up the 22re, im better off doing this swap for v8 and getting nearly the same gas mileage but with tripple the power. :looney:

I'm still a Ford guy so I say 302. As long as you don't get an early 302, or a 289, your transmission options are pretty good. You can run the T5, which is really plentiful and not likely to blow up. I bought a World Class for $200. And for auto you have C4, C6 and AOD. My friend just did an AOD swap on his Ranchero, and its pretty awesome. Has a mildly built 302 in front of it running propane, gets great mileage. Found it at pick n pull in an 80s Crown Victoria with 80K miles, and just put it in his Ranchero and drove it. Aside from installing a shift kit, its stock.

EFI is cool if you get a car that came with it to rob parts. Otherwise just go carburetor. Its so simple. My friends Ranchero did 17 MPG on gas on a tired bottom end, and 21 on propane after rebuilding the motor and bumping compression a bit.

would a 4.6L Mustang GT motor be easier to play with?

yea..... the ford is still my 50/50 option. i have not ruled it out yet..... its gonna come down to the first deal i come across. im trying to just find a donor vehicle that runs and i can yank the drivetrain out of. if not no biggie. i just wanna have a complete setup or something that wont require a whole lot of nickle and dime piecing to get it going.

mileage i should be "ok" on if i can retain myself from hittin the skinny pedal.... witch, given ill use the stock tank, 10 gallons to get a round with a v8 will teach me to drive on a curve :duh:

i thought about this and once i seen one in a crown vic i sh|t a brick when i found out how massive it was! :runaway:

they dwarf the old 5.0 by allot!!! WTF happened??? :looney:

No idea. My friend has a Mustang with a bunch of goodies on it he's trying to part out. So I measured the motor. I know its DOHC, but seriously don't get why its so big. Ford made OHC motors in the 60s that where much smaller, and way cooler looking.

    Just go SBF.

yea....... been looking at the taxi cars with the 4.6 at the yards and the heads on them are just ginormous!!!! oh well.....

yea. im trying to look for either sbf or chevy 350 out of a later model. apparently some of the chevy's went to a front distributor mount around 94 or so? so this may be a new option too..... gonna hit up the yards in a bit. ill see what i find and pricing on drivetrains.

Seth is most likely talking about the 32valve 4.6. Its been swapped in a toyoyo before and no reason why it couldnt be put in a truck.

300 NA HP stock with a hi-revving honda like powerband. Whick would actually nice because of our inhereted shatty traction.

YouTube - Celica Cobra 1st Run

It is significantly wider than a SOHC (or 16valve) 4.6. Valve covers are huge.

And SD, your talking about the LT1 or LT4 based motors. AKA gen 2 small block chevy. They are plentiful and cheap. Just not popular with hot rodders. I had 1 in my police code caprice back in high school. Torquey as hell, no top end.

And just for your information, they made a LT5 in special edition corvettes. 32valve DOHC small block chevy. Pure sex small block. The engine pacage cost more than the cars...

    confused yet?

    :looney: ..........................................

yea. for safe measures, im gonna try and stick with something out of a 89+ chevy truck, blazer, tahoe, burban etc.... for ease of mind, id like to try and stick with something pre-obdII. so between 89 and 96 is my window. if it really comes down to it, ill just stick with gen 1 sbc and find my way around cali's bitchy laws. either way, its still coming down to what i can find at the yeards and or craigslist for the money.

been reading a couple books specifically for the sbc. so many options its baffling...... buuuuut, slowly im catching on..

 yea...... given its performance peak was slightly stunted, that 302 of yours pulls pretty good.

anyhow...... i took some research type shots for those of you curious as to how well these motors fit in the trucks. this is a fox body mustang type 5.0 with a t5 tranny in a 84-88 body style 4x4 (converted to 2wd) extra cab truck.
