I hate to ask this cuz i feel like a total noob, but has anyone on here changed rotors on a 2wd 76 longbed? I had the wheels off mine the other day and i have never seen a brake setup like this. 2 piece calipers? wth? are the hubs pressed into the rotors? or do the rotors just slide off like on most cars and trucks? Thanks for any help you guys may have.
take the caliper off undo the wheel bearings then the rotor unbolts from the back it looks worse than it is id go with new rotors if your in that deep the calipers are awesome you can load the pads without removing them undo the little clips holding the guide pins then tap them out and pull the pads out the top if you search here you can find a neat upgrade that gives you big slide on rotors and 300zx caliper works on the 79-84 and im pretty sure it would also work on yours
There's a few ways to go about bigger better brakes. Most are pretty simple. I haven't torn my stock stuff down past changing pads and outer wheel bearings but it looks pretty straight forward.
Thanks for the help man... I guess we will see how it goes today... I am gonna be replacing the rotors and pads today, and maybe block off the egr system until i can get an EGR delete manifold. This truck sat for god knows how long in a field, so the rotors are pitted badly and squeal like you wouldnt believe. haha
well, I got the pads and rotors replaced. The hubs simply do just bolt on to the rotors. easy as pie... i just couldnt remember how they came apart. I also went ahead and made some trim covers for my cab vents out of PBR cans and added a beer tap for a shift knob lol
Alright, so I lubed the ever-lovin hell outta everything, still squealing like crazy. Im seriously pulling my hair out at this point. Ive ordered organic pads, they should be in today. After I install those pads, if they still squeak... I dont know what else to do?
organic pads suck for a daily driver! they stink like **** when they get hot, brake fade like crazy and wear out real fast.
I have some duralast gold's on my truck from about 2004? (These are semi metallic or ceramic) and they have plenty of pad and rotor (duralast also, lol). surprisingly, even with my aggressive driving and braking... there's a $%^& ton of pad left. I don't know how, but it's probably because my truck is relatively light... haha that or i downshift and engine brake
Of course rolling is no issue to a Toyota. Don't ya watch top gear? Yes organics are horrible. Wear fast. Tons of brake dust. Noisy stinky.. im a Wagner thermoquiet from OReillys mmyself. Nice quality ceramic. Very quiet
YUUUUUUUUUUUUUUP!!!! did mine recently and it had old dried up red grease that i could have sworn might have been from the factory! installed new races and bearings.....coasts smooth now!
You just have to remember that these organic pads are made from recycled VW vans, tofu byproducts and hippy-chick armpit hair. Things the organic crowd has in abundance. So, Buyer Beware.
Ill do bearings when I do late model brakes. I have other problems to chase down before I get to preventive stuff.
