Just looking at other engine ideas that would be period or series-correct if produced within another country. Any ideas, This was also a Publica truck I believe in Japan. Please correct me if im'm incorrect please.
Yeah, 12R, 18R, and 20-22R according to my Japanese parts listings. I should have checked my library first, but I'm sure that I need to check further. http://www.retrojdm.com/Search.asp?Make=Toyota&Model=Hilux+(Pickup)
Was hoping to find the cross member for a Publica truck if it had the T-series engine. More modifications are available for that series. Now I will find out the measurements for the engine compartment. I believe an underpowered Turbocharged Twin Cam would look good under that hood. https://imgur.com/AqfWHrS https://i.imgur.com/AqfWHrS.jpg
If your truck IS a Publica, the engines available were the "K" series, which typically ran parallel to the "T" series in optios for models. Engines aren't interchangeable as the vehicles they were available in were made per engine installled. The "K" series engine does carry a big following and parts are available.
Naw, you'd have to mod the mounts. Probably easier than sourcing a crossmember. But a 3T in a little pickup would be cool! Punch a 3T out to 2 liters and have a little screamer! What IS in the truck now?
My spare 18-RC but the modifications to install a pair of twin Offenhoser carburetors on that downdraft pair of single carbs are getting in the way of my brake system (Original problem when this was first produced from Offie.) This is a photo of what it should look like before installation. (Not my items in this photo. still have to purchase Carbs.)
Working by myself these days, the attempt was made to install a twin-cam engine, however, the Celica won the coin toss. I installed the 18RG into my 73 Coupe. Rewiring remains on that project. Trying a really different direction for this truck, using parts onhand. I have the test fit items so that is where I'm seeing specific problems. But around here, finding a machine shop is impossible to get items turned in for repair are in short supply
Well, if you do go the route of the "T" series, there's a shop up in the Carolinas called "BRD Racing" if you need a macine shop and parts. I believe they're agreeable to machinig pretty much anything. For the Celica I would have goe for a 2TG or even a 4AGE. The 18RG was available in that car, but it was still a tractor engine, even in "G" trim. I've had 2TGs with 200+hp and they were a BLAST! The 18RGs I reserved for my '71 pickup. The 18RG still had something of a bottom end and was still good for driveability. My 2TGs had nothing below 4000rpm ( definately NOT stock ). Terrible for driving around town. That was back when the 2TG and 18RG were easy to find, and find parts for.

Machinist-required Parts were never an issue, I'm Older and was wise to set items aside for my builds. I'm not a fan of BRD Racing in North Carolina. Multiple attempts to do business always ended up with him not being available or extremely booked in advance. I was spoiled with the amount of machine repair in California and its like loosing a source of dependable businesses within my former area. Being in Cali I can agree that we have plenty of machine shops. Actually have a LOT of good shops! Sadly there are also a bunch that should never touch any employed parts. Yeah, saving parts is essential in this hobby. I can rebuild my MR2 3 times over. Celicas!! I've had every generation Celica that came FR! Fave was the '77 Coupe. I hated the Hatch, damned thing was the leakiest car I eve had. Between the Celicas, Coronas, and Pickups I've had a 40 year affair with the "R" series engine. Great engine! Damn near indestructible! Then I met the 4AGE in '90. Don't tell my 22RE.
