I just picked up a 78 from some dingbat that did not know what he was doing. He tried swapping in a 22r and w5? from an 83. First problem was the clutch would not engage. He says it has an Exedy stage 2 clutch. Pulled the trans and the clutch is engaged. It looks to be the clutch he stated it was. But I don't think the arm for the throw out bearing is correct. Does this look like the right one? Please help. I will attach pic.
The master and slave cylinders are new, but not bled yet. But I don't think they are the problem. I've also messed with the adjuster on the slave to no avail. I will check those things this evening after work.
So I pulled the clutch and the disk was in backwards. I put it back in the right way. But with the slave off of the trans, the clutch is still not engaging.
I know it's not the right way, but how bad would it be if I modified the hole for the clutch fork? It looks like I would only need to take off about 10-12 mm.
I have an '88 with the 22R and W55, so I can't guarantee my truck's setup is the same as an '83's setup. But, looking at my shop manual, the release fork is one of those pressed steel forks, not the forged/cast fork in your picture. Perhaps your fork is too thick and keeping the throw out bearing pressed against the clutch? Edit: So, did a little more digging and found a picture of your release fork in my 1979 Celica service manual. It's a 20R and W50 combination. Don't know if that makes a difference but at least you know what part you have...
Just a hail mary thought... with the clutch cover unbolted, are the diaphragm spring fingers sticking out? Just thought maybe with the disk installed backwards, the pressure plate was pushed out enough to cause the diaphragm spring to go over-center...
Mrdinkleman, thanks for the info. With the trans removed, the clutch is engaged. I'm pretty sure now that it is the wrong clutch fork. I'm debating on whether or not to just modify the bell housing to make what I have work. I heard for people doing it before, but not often.
You might (should?) not have to modify the bell housing. From what I've read, 20R, 22R, W50, W55 are bolt-on interchangeable. May be that the pivot ball and fork are specific to each other. So it might be as simple as getting a different release fork pivot ball. Unfortunately, the pictures in the shop manuals don't show enough details to see if the pivots (22R/W55 vs. 20R/W50) are different. Probably should visit parts counter at the dealer and ask if they are the same part number.
Not to sure which whether it was the bell housing, clutch fork, or pivot point, but I found a w50 from a 76 celica for cheap. Slapped it in and BAM, no fitment issues anymore.
Yes, I did measure them they were within a 10th of an inch of each other. Weird, i know. But I'm not complaining. lol
