My clutch fan is bad.You can stop the fan with your hadn.Do I need the fan and all?or can i just buy the clutch and use my old fan?
Hmmm... Kind of brave to stick your hand in the fan with the engine turning... Anyway, when you stop the fan is the engine fully warmed up? IIRC, the clutch is a thermal clutch and "engages" when the engine is warm, not based on speed like a centrifugal clutch...
The clutch can be replaced independently of the fan blades. As was mentioned above the fan freewheels below it's cycling temp. Does the engine overheat? Can you hear the fan cycle on when the truck is warmed and sitting at a stop? The clutch fluid can be replaced quite easily. I replaced mine with RC differential fluid (non-Newtonian silicone) I bought from the local hobby shop. I forget the exact blend and amount, but it works great now:
Im not sure about it over heating right now.I just got it back together. It had set for 20 years.Just started some times. So about every gasket was rotten and the head was stopped up.I had to replace the timing chain. But fans not any stronger when its warmed up.The fan clutch its self is making a sound.Like a ticking sound. It might be the assembaly that bolts to the engine. Thanks for posting up some pics!!
I wonted to say.The fan were it bolts to the engine. The assembaly might be making the sound?what do you all think?
With the engine off and cold spin the fan by hand. It should have only slight resistance and should not make any noise. If that is okay then take the belt off and spin the water pump by hand. It should freewheel easily and not make any noise.
