Ok, so I am new to the yota, but I feel comfortable working on brake repairs and such. I know that I am going to have to perform a brake job one of these days, so I am thinking that it is upgrade time. I have read up on the 84+ conversion, but because of my lack of yota experience I am wondering...

can anyone help me with brake upgrades for the 83 model?! :meemee:

    much appreciated!

What makes you think you need bigger brakes? Im just asking....

I spent alot of my time (and money), getting a killer brake setup on my 82. I love it and wouldnt live without it. But it caused me several horrible headaches.

Ok enough chit-chat heres some pics...

Bigger brakes mean better stopping power, plus i am in need of some more projects...is it possible to do the 4x4 swap like the 84+ trucks can...

That looks like a sweet setup for your truck...share the details

Although they are factory spindles in the picture....

I wanted to (and now am) running chassis tech 84+ drop spindles,
    84+ ball joints
84+ lower and upper control arms
95 LS400 Lexxus front calipers and rotors
    84+ hubs and bearings
    84+ V6 2wd 24MM sway bar.

    82 steering components
82 torsion bar parts with SAW bars
    82 Poly bushings.

The rotors themselves are 315X28MM. Almost requiring a 16in wheel. caliper is a twin 36MM floater. Stock master cylinder.

I dont know if you can run this hardware on a 83 hub. No reason you couldnt. But I wanted the drop spindles and thats why I did the whole front suspension.

Why, that is quite the process. I am not really wanting to do the whole front suspension as well, but props for you doing it. I am thinking at least rotors, therefore calipers, etc. I am running, if i remember right, 15 bbs wheels. just picked them up and had to do a little core grind to get them to fit, but they are on

do you think i would have any options with that setup

Rotors-Stock sized? or are you talking about going bigger. Not quite sure what you had in mind.

The 79-83 have plenty of stopping power with that good size factory dual piston caliper. Its just that it will heat fade/warp like a SOB if you run it hard because of the tiny pads and pizza cutter rotor.

Who knows? Maybe you can bolt 84+ brake caliper/rotor/hub onto a 79-83 spindle. It might just work considering they are the same bearings. Only one way to see if it will work :waytogo:

I do know they make drilled/slotted 84+ rotors and nice pads for the later trucks.

If your really worried about stopping power---

Get some good shocks. Like MonroeMatics or Bilstiens. Preferrably HD sports.
Get sway a way torsion bars. Itll help with the nose diving.
Bigger sway bar in a way increases spring rate. They help.
Get sticky tires. Im running 245-50R16 BFG GforceSports. All the difference in the world.

^That stuff will be better than a caliper and rotor swap.

Cool, i will look into those for sure. yea, i was thinking going bigger than the stock sized rotors, but if the other things help just as well, then I will have to give them a look at well. I would not be considering this on an average day, but since i am doing a brake job coming up i was looking at my options. thanks for the knowledge, i will update my decisions manana
