I'm beginning to think I may just run hot on the freeway, as it does fine with just city driving.. I installed a mechanical temp gauge since my gauges aren't exactly accurate. So far it did about 210 on the freeway and about 190 in the city, but that was only one drive each.
I had very similar symptoms. the culprit was a plugged radiator. Visually nothing was wrong, It would just overheat sometimes, then it became more regular.
That's what I kind of expected, seeing as it looks original.. My plan is to go to the junkyard and compare radiators from different generations of our trucks and see if any are a direct fit, and buy an all aluminum 2 or 3 core to replace it with.. Hopefully that will fix it
Decided I'm going with a all aluminum 4 runner radiator.. Just haven't decided where to buy it. Found a 3 core one on eBay for $170 shipped, and I found one on andys auto sport for $126 but don't know how many cores it has.. I'll probably go with the eBay one
Bendiesel was spot on, it was the radiator. I got a 2 core all aluminum one for a 90's 4 runner on ebay for $160 and also put in a lower temp thermostat and all is well again! I havnt even hit 190 degrees on the freeway doing 4000 rpm for a couple miles.. Well worth the money and time!
mines was boiling too. i could hear it inside the cab. i blew the head gasket. #4 was done and seen #1 was starting to go. pull plugs when vehicle is hot and see if piston top are shiney, coolant leaking into cylinder past the gasket =blown gasket.
I'm pretty sure my head gasket is fine, simply because I haven't had any problems since I switched radiators. It wasn't boiling or getting really hot every time I drove it, and it didn't matter how I drove it when it did. I will keep that in mind if it does boil again though!
hey first80toyota how did that radiator fit? im having the same problem with my 78. runs hot on the freeway but i dont have a problem with city driving
