I have never seen a stepside pre 95. Even has a shaved tailgate handle. Wow not a fan of stepside buy very neat though.
If built right you can do both. My Drop leafs and air shocks allow for both. Handles well and will carry a load a load when needed.

I found the best way was to swap a dash and dash brace from a runner. Not hard to do but finding a non cracked dash was hard.
