Today @ Pick N Pull Came across a 74' Chinook at a PNP today. Jaw dropping perfect grille. When I say perfect, I mean all the tabs were intact, chrome rings had no dings or rust, and not a single crack! The one that came with my truck isn't even this clean. Super clean set of seat belts that retract silky smooth. My current driver's side belt is faded, sheared and crusty in spots. Passenger side will only retract halfway and is just as weathered. I love how the shoulder straps hook and un-hook to the waist belt. One of those old school details I get a kick out of. Hood emblem w/ all three tabs still intact. Super clean factory radio bezel. Also came across a 75' Celica. Swiped the slightly lower profile valve cover (now soaking in solvent) and it's metal TEQ oil fill cap.
Back to Pick N Pull Decided to go back today to snatch up the taillight lenses. They look way cleaner than the ones currently on my HiLux.
thanks for sharing what u did to ur gas tank, it was really helpful and something i gotta do soon. as for that hilux repair manual u mentioned on page 4 do u know if they make the same book for a 79 through 83 also where did u get it if u dont mind me asking, ebay? looks like u got some nice parts off that chinook i wish i could find parts for my truck but ive never seen anything older then an 86 at my local junkyard lol
All my manuals came off of Ebay. Some were cheaper than others. I paid $70 for my 72.5'-74' Suspension and Body Electrical Factory Manual. But I can't even imagine owning my HiLux without it, now. 69' to 78' Haynes cost me $12. 20R factory manual (now FOR SALE) cost me $30. All have been extremely helpful. Trust me, pick up a manual, you won't regret it. Yes, they do have one for your year and model. As for parts that you might need, quite a few guys here can help you out. Including myself. Just gotta check the For Sale section often to see what we all have available. At the same time you can post a list on the Wanted section. I've picked up a few pieces here, as well as sold and given away spare bits. So you're definitely at the right party.
I appreciate the offer, but I'm actually holding on to the valve cover and oil cap for my 22R swap. I believe Shonuff had one for sale last year... http://www.toyotaminis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1796&highlight=profile+valve+cover
Finally got the rear differential, leaf springs, shocks, and drive shaft out of the 77' swapped over to the 72'. Next, the 5speed and entire front clip.
I have learned so much from this thread. I think alot of what I have read I can use on my 71' Hilux project. I you were able to bolt alot of parts from a 77' over to a late 72', then it should be resonable to be able to bolt the same parts onto a 71'.
Since I've never owned a '71 I can't say for sure. Even between my '72 and '77, not everything was exactly a "bolt on" swap. For example, the mounting holes of the front cross members do not match up. But the components themselves; upper and lower arms, idler arm, pitman arm, etc. are all the same and swappable. The center links between the 2 trucks was ever so slightly different as well. Particularly where the inner tie rod ends bolt up to it. Swappable none the less. But it made an alignment not just a good idea, but an absolute must. One other thing I learned while taking bits off the newer truck was that although the flywheel and clutch off of a 20R will bolt onto an 18RC with no issues, the 20R flywheel/crankshaft bolts are different than those on the older 18RC motor.
No difference. Other than the fact that the rear end on the '77 had new seals, wasn't leaking, wasn't all rusty, nor was it caked with decades worth of grime like the one originally on the '72.
