I have been keeping this updated. Today I get to go pull the front cover back off, and install an oil plug I missed. And hopefully the rear one can be access from the starter hole. I really don't want to pull the motor and trans back apart. I fought that for over an hour. The dowel pins are usually a real tight fit.

Hey Bud what rig did you get the antenna off of?

I got the antenna from some 70s datsun car in the yard. Easy install, just drill 3 holes.

So I got the motor in, running, and I love it. It has a small leak at the oil pan gasket. I'll get that fixed tomorrow. And change the oil, adjust the valves, tweak the timing and stuff. I'll probably rejet the carb a bit richer on the mains too. Even with a stock cam, it wants fuel. Pulls real strong though.

The bad, my header is dying. The collector is cracked, drug through, and leaking. The upper part all looks solid. I may just make an new collector for it up the hill so its not under frame level.

I have a BUNCH of photos of me working on it today. I'll upload them, do a writeup about doing a headgasket/timing chain, and post a link here. I'll post a few general pics in here too.

Here are a bunch of photos from today. They were taken in this order. I had the motor in, but had to tear it all back down for the two oil plugs I forgot.

When I got to the shop today. It was already up on blocks. Hood was just sitting there.

This was the point that I stopped the other day. Head and intake are just sitting there.

This needs to come off :\
    [IMG]

After all the hardware is removed, this is where I like to pry from. Its a solid point. But don't get carried away.

You can see the fitting I had to install above the tensioner.

I left the head in its place for the above photos, to show people how a timing chain can be swapped without removing the head. But I suggest replacing the head gasket at the same time. Makes the job easier, and you've already got it torn down.

Install the chain with the upper gear, and set it into the guides.

I like to glue the gaskets down to the cover, using a very thin film of sealer. I used the high temp copper stuff for all of this. It should hold up well.

Thin film should look about like this
    [IMG]

The head had been torqued and assembled, now the motor was lifted up to drop the flywheel. So I could install the rear plug.

    That little ****er
    [IMG]

Clean out the bellhousing inside, and try to do a better job than this. I think my old rear main seal was leaky. This trans has only been in a few months and was spotless when I first put it in.

This is how we do motor pulls. Not as easy to do as using a cherry picker, but we don't need a paved surface for it either. Its a trade off. We built it. And yes, I do want to lay it out :D
    [IMG]

When in doubt, use something purple  It helps steady the motor on the chain if you make a locked loop for the hook to not slide around on the chain. Or make an x from two chains.

Tomorrow I'll get all my greasy paw prints off of the freshly painted motor, and get some photos. I'll get a video too if I remember. Atleast a walkaround clip, maybe a driving shot too if I can get the camera wedged in the seat or something. :D

Wow nice write up. Always wanted to try rebuilding a motor myself but always been scared. Looking through the pics it doesnt seem as bad as i thought it would be. One question though, do you have to break in the motor now? And how do you go about doing that? I was told stay under 3K RPM for the first 10K miles, then after that should be top shape. Let me know. Thanks.

This motor is basically just fresh crank/rod bearings, and fresh rings. And a new head gasket. Its the same cam I had before. My dads rule of thumb is "run it in different RPM ranges and gears for the first 500 miles. Change the oil the second day. And don't drive it too hard." So that's how I'm going about it. When you have a new cam to break in, you run it for about 20 minutes at about 2500 RPM then change the oil. I'll put a cam down the road.

Yeah. And having a welded spider pumpkin, I should have no issues spinning both tires through the first couple gears :D

I shot me some videos!

Here they are. For having zero choke to the motor, it starts and stays running after holding a high idle for a minute or so. Second video is a 1st/2nd/partial 3rd pull. Its raining. So I had to take it easy. That was on the way back from napa. On the same road headed there I got up to about 5k RPM in 4th. I don't have the speedo hooked up, but when I used to, that was over 100 mph. Its a 45 zone. In the video I let off about 65.

I don't know why it wouldn't show the first video properly either. But here is that other clip
