This thread ,will be intended for this fair easy simple swap i did this swap my self went fairly smooth, with that being said here it goes most w58 come in the late 83s celica's supra's mk3 87-92 the non-turbo for your best cars to find it in if you need help identifying a w58 you can always check the vin plate located under the hood on the firewall [IMG]
kind of hard to tell but the red marks were it will tell you what transmission that vehicle is equipped with

[IMG] my old w55 on the bottom w58 on top notice where the shifter is on the w58 rather than the w55

first i knew i had to swap the bellhousing from a 22r to fit . My next step was i needed to swap the tailshaft housing because i didnt want to cut a whole in my cab, at first i was hesitant into removing it but did some research and saw i was able to remove it and swap it [IMG]

[IMG] this is the w58 with the w55 bellhousing and my tailhousing from the w55
i used all the same bolts n just cleaned up the old gaskests before i assembled it back i didnt use any new silicone just the same bolts and untouched gasket nice and tight
last step i didnt know till i did my swap is "you will need to use the same w58 speed sensor from the w58 onto the w55 tailhousing in order for your speedometer to work" and that is pretty much it in order to bolt it up to your truck. if u you have any questions comment concerns feel free to ask me and if i have missed anything please do so an chime in :waytogo: Good Luck on your swap!

Nice little write-up. If you can get a 82-85 celica or celica supra no tail swap needed.
    And no ecu changes needed

What is the significance of this swap? Is it a better transmission?

It is a sportier trans if I am correct. More sports car and less truck feelin if that makes sense.

1-2-3-4 shifts are all closer together so the engine is kept closer to the power band. 5th is higher than others too so it cruises better. My 90 has one backed by an 8" diff with 4.10's so it accelerates hard and can cruise the highway just fine.

My 90 is the uber base model that did indeed come with an 8" rear end loaded with 3.07's. Running 195/60/15's it runs 70 at about 3100 rpm so its not perfect but it works!

Will this swap also work with the MK IV Supra W58 transmissions?
