I've got a '92 22 RE pickup with 136K miles and I'm wondering about the timeing chain replacement (It's never been done) and if I need to get it done now or can it wait? No way can I do it myself so what am I looking at expense-wise? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! PS: I did some reading and it appears to be a good idea to get metal guides and perhaps replace the water pump when the chain is replaced. Make sense? Thanks in advance!
best free thing you can do is remove the valve cover and look down on the right sideof the timing cover if the guide is stil there and engine is quite then you could wait. doa engines and LCE and engie builder sell timing chain kits. replacing the water pump is cheap insureance. you can do it yourself just follow the write ups on-line.
Those sound like good tips. I've read the oil pan can be hard to remove, it this the case or is it just unbolt, and rebolt with a new gasket?
By the time you get the valve cover and oil pan off you're already halfway to doing the job. If you can do it yourself just do it, otherwise just take it in to the shop. Water pump and oil pump can be reused, but need to be inspected. This was my oil pump at 207K: http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s131/aaron_sK/toyota/toyota015_zpse482d298.jpg
