I need to to do this as well but I have the worst luck with cars so I don't want to risk it. :(

Yeah, ditto. I prefer to use engine cleaner (foaming type), brush for really caked on crap, and a gentle rinsing.

I can strongly suggest that you wait until it's completely cool. Most of the products you use will bake on if its hot, but ive also learned the hard way that your exhaust manifold isn't built for that kind of stress

Yeah, I found out the hard way too (the baking on when the engine is hot part, that is).

The early ford escort engines (1.6 and 1.9) were notorious for cracking the cylinder head if you even thought of getting them wet when they were at running temp. There was even stories of people cracking the head by adding oil to the engine while hot. Since owning one of them I have been very good about making sure the engine of any vehicle I clean isn't hot before washing it. I'm sure its not an issue with the Toy's, but old habits die hard. As far as pressure washing goes, I've slathered the Toyota's engine with engine degreaser at the car wash and pressure washed the engine bay several times without covering anything. Never had a problem... But keep in mind that doesn't mean it won't happen. Maybe I've just been lucky.

Easy...if your actually gonna use a pressure washer NOT a water hose you don't need to cover anything...u really don't use a loot of water when ur pressure washing just use degreaser (I use purple power) then rinse lightly...I always use my leaf blower to dry my engine bay and dis cap if went inside and MAF...

cover the distributor, don't aim close or too much at anything electrical.
