OK.. I've got a stupid question. I've never really thought about it and don't know for sure so that's why I'm asking..

Does the power steering pump actually pump fluid when your NOT turning the steering wheel at idle? Please only answer if you know FOR SURE!

Reason being is I installed a new pump when I rebuilt my motor and drained all the fluid out of the reservoir and lines. The only old fluid that's left is in the gear assembly. I plan on flushing the rest out and filling back up with Red Line Synthetic ATF after the engine break in is complete.

Got to thinking and I don't want to fry the new pump during engine break in if the pump circulates fluid at idle.

Again, please don't answer if you don't know, assuming is not good enough.

yes it does it recycles it in the pump throw the box

So fill it up then turn the wheel back forth once it wont take any more fulid start it up and bleed the air out wail adding more fluid

If the pulley is spinning it's pumping fluid.

Kinda what I thought. There isn't much fluid left in the system as it is. So I wont worry about flushing whats left out. I'll just fill it up with new fluid and bleed the air.

Any idea how much the system will hold? two quarts should be more than enough I assume.

    Thanks Fellas.

Yeah, two quarts is more than enough.
