So I need to replace my transmission seals.

This is new to me, so after some online research, it looks like the seals themselves are about the same price at the dealership as autozone, so might as well go genuine Toyota.

I called and the options were press ‘1’ for sales, ‘2’ for service, ‘3’ for parts. I pressed ‘3’ for parts.

“Hello, thanks for calling your local Toyota Stealership”

“Hi. I’m looking for some transmission seals for a 92 Pickup.”

    “Ok, one moment please.”

    “Service Dept.”

“Hi. I’m looking for some transmission seals for a 92 Pickup.”

    “Transmission Seals?”

“Yes, seals. One for the front and one for the rear.”

    “Ok, what year and model?”

    “92 Toyota Pickup.”

    “Just pickup?”

“Yeah, the one before they called it a Tacoma.”

    “Hmm… not a T100?”

    “No. Just Pickup.”

“Ok, let me call the Parts Department. Please hold”

*Wait, what? I can’t talk directly to the parts department, huh?

“Ok, thanks for holding. Apparently they don’t know what you mean by transmission seals. And there were a lot of transmissions for that model, so we would need your VIN.”

“Well, I can give you my VIN, but I’m not sure how that’s going to help if you don’t know what I mean by transmission seals. How about input shaft seal, output shaft seal, and pinion seal for the differential?”

“Ok, let me call them back. Please hold.”

*WTF, they do service cars and sell parts for said cars here, right? And why can’t I talk directly to the Parts Department again?

After a bit of a wait, they did actually get me a price on each of those three seals, but I don’t think I have a lot of confidence in them. If they try to sell me halogen fluid or a spare transmission “just in case” or something sketchy like that when I’m there, I’m gonna be pissed.

Anyone else have issues like this?

Yea most of the time they have idiots working the parts counter who have no idea what theyre doing. Bet you could go in there and ask em for a muffler bearing or an exhaust throttle body and theyd actually look for it

im asssuming the receptionist xfered you over to one of the Service Advisor and not the part dept or they the front counter parts person picked up and they usually have not idea what your talking about. Sometimes in TIS our trucks are labelled as "truck" Or "Pickup". Worked at a Lexus dealership for 8 years and this was a common problem.
