Just got the truck a week and a half ago it definitely needs tuning. I've leaned out the stock carb some but haven't got into timing or air flow but I'm getting half of what I should be getting by the looks of it.

i just figured mine the other day and came up with 28 mpg. that's with a bone stock motor that just had the top end of the motor re-built. i live in the mountains so my mileage is prob a bit lower than someone that wouldn't have to pull those long grades up and down all the time. motor has 140k miles on it...

oh and mine's an 87 and carborated

I definitely gotta dig into this thing. When I got home from work today I've driven maybe 70 miles and I'm under 1/2 tank left. Grrr

Just a thought here, but you shouldn't be relying on the fuel gage for the MPG estimate. I have been fighting with my 78 for some time now and its fuel sending unit, which has the float and reostat for the fuel gage. I thought I got it all fixed and it reades accurately for about the first 100 miles, then is quickly goes to zero! So i have to track miles from when I filled last. I do get about 22 MPG with a newly rebuilt 20R, weber carb, and no other mods except the tires are bigger than stock. If I had stock size tires I am sure I would get a whole lot better AND if i tweaked the timing back to lose the "gydeeeee up" then I would surely get around 30MPG.... Just some thoughts though...

    Cheers!

I'll be calculating when I actually fill again but that gauge has just been dropping like a rock since I filled it as this is the first tank I've run. I've got the starting mileage written down.

biggja22, I hear you brother about it falling like a rock. Thats exactly what mine does after 100 miles. I would almost bet money that your engine is not consuming more that you think. I would also bet that it needs a tune up as well like you stated and that will certainly help. In my own experience, I have never seen a little 4 banger engine eat gas fast enough to drop the fuel gage to half in 70 miles. Thats DRINKING some gas. Maybe in a big block chevy that is all supped up or a Ford 460 engine (like I used to have)!!!!!! All good, update your post when you find out what is hapenning!!!

    Cheers and good luck!!!!

    I'm getting 24mpg.

On my 81, I do about 70mph highway speed but my tires are shorter compared to the factory ones. My rev is a hair higher because of it

I drive for Dominos pizza and sometimes use my toyota for a shift and usually average a hair*under*25mpg. Driving to my grandmas 57 miles away strictly hwy i averaged 29 mpg round-trip in my Toyota. In July I bought a 94 escort with 115k miles for Dominos driving. Average 28-30 ac on in the escort. Not a Ford man AT ALL but I love my Toyota tooo much to put so many miles for dominos. My yota is mostly stock setup such as carb, exhaust, egr, million miles of vaccuum lines, stock tire size. The Toyota has over 200k but the 22r is a fresh rebuild. Around income tax time I do plan on doing 2-1/4" exhaust and Weber 32/36 carb on this '83 like i had on my 93 before some a**hole torched it. I would get a solid 28mpg in my '93 driving for work.

I'm getting about 0.0 miles per gallon right now. (the carb is still awaiting rebuild).
My DD, the 85 pulsar, gets 35-40, and i'll likely continue to drive it to work.
