88 22RE 4x4: at first it was a low knocking noise that went for weeks without changing. metal on metal similar to a rod-knock... in two days it went from subtle to loudly echoing through the streets. like something was loose and then came VERY loose inside. but it has good compression and still idles fine just a super loud knock. i went so far as removing tranny completely (had that problem once in my old 2wd) and disconnecting all pulleys to eliminate as much as possible without pulling the motor. its still there. im no pro but im stubborn and determined not to bring it in.any suggestions? :verdict_in:

    rod knock is my guess

need to tear down motor, if I am correct this will end with your bock innards becoming aerated.

(hole in block as rod separates and blows hole in side of block)

Yes sounds like a rod cap coming loose if it clangs that bad I'd pull the oil pan and check it out

Pretty sure if it's as bad as you make it sound the crank will already have too much damage to be able to bring it back to life without some serious machining. You said you pulled the trans did you also remove the pressure plate and inspect the flywheel?I have had my bolts run loose and it makes a pretty loud knock.

try tighten your exhaust manifold/headers (if you get). and check for exhaust leaks. its cheap and easy worth a shot
