Hey guys. so another installment of a how to from yer neighborhood friendly SD Yota Garage. today, we are gonna swap out your old base or dlx model front dome light out for the SR5 optional map light / dome light combo mirror. here is what you'll need. - x1 SR5 map light from 89-95 model trucks or 4runners. - phillips screw driver - angled or 90* tooth pick or small flat screwdriver - razor blade first off, start by removing the cover on your stock dome light. access the 3 retaining screws, and undo them to drop the dome light, and unplug the connector powering it. next, you are gonna take your SR5 map light mirror and hold it close near where it will fasten to the top... you can actually press into the vinyl a little bit to mark where you will need to cut x2 "x" shaped cuts to allow the individual housings to sit recessed into the liner. using your razor blade, cut an "X" into each side where the housing will sit into. once you cut them in... clip in the connector to the maplight. it will plug right in just like the old one. ****BE AWARE, if you have an extra cab, you WILL need to run a tap into the wires from your original dome light to this location. these wires can be accessed from the a pillar, remove the cover, they are run through there. i used two female spade connectors to insert them into the map light socket, or you can also use a spare original connector to wire it in. i used a piece of welding wire to gently fish the wires through the headliner**** once the mirror sits in place nice n snug, use the two screws closest to the windshield to secure it into place. there is not provisions to use the other two screws but they will be enough to hold the mirror in place without issue. finally, as you may have noticed, i used some nice LED pellets to give off a brighter light, (not to mention these wont drain your battery down if you leave em on for whatever reason) the light output is just crazy!! anyhow, toss the cover on and yer done! ....your truck is that much more SR5_ier... lol
Post a link for the bulbs. It's a reminder I wanna swap all my bulbs for LED, inside and out. Only about half way there lol.
i get em locally through a dealer buddy. make a list of what you need, size and color, n ill get you a price. the more you buy, the cheaper it is.
I got a map light like that but its from a 4runner but it doesn't have the rocker switch that makes the light go on when you open the door. still better that the original one though
My 93 factory plug would not just clip inplace, I had to depin the connector in the plug and use the terminal end directly on the light connector....spacing between the terminals was to big....just fyi...and the "4runner map light " led's I ordered off ebay were too wide...so I had to kinda stretch open the metal tabs to accomodate them......good writeup!!
thats odd... all the ones ive swapped in the local crew trucks plugged in no issues? the led's are an issue, they are not a common size but my buddy happened to have the right ones. he said the std ones are too long. there are a set that are slightly shorter and pop in place with the correct tension on the tabs.
yea, I could move the wires in the connector but its alright. maybe i'll find an sr5 map light later.
this can also be done to the 84-88 trucks i did it to mine just had t0 redrill a whole on the housing right under the elctrical and a minimal gap u have but good lighting at night
nice dude! i tried it on my 86 but i couldnt stand the gap... so i took it off.... reason i had allot of these. lol
I just installed this mirror this morning (purchased from sd). Installation is exactly as described on my 93 yota. Thanks SD!
they make a 400mm??!! i did not know that.... i have the 300mm shown there but i cant imagine what the 400mm looks like... lol
I'm wondering, because i happened to install a 4 runner light/mirror in my '86 the other day I'm dealing with the gap for now, but i will find something slick to fill it with someday!.... And in turn, will fill you guys in, lol.
awesome man! @YOguyDA you can get these on ebay. you need the stock bulb number, then type in (example) 194 LED. and you'll find em that way. i got mine locally, $10 for both fronts, and $20 for the rear one. the rear one was more expensive because i wanted it brighter so i got the 32 (or 36... cant remember) led grid. my phone does not have a good night time exposure so imma get a better one tomorrow.
