Online FSM This online FSM will be handy, especially when you're diving into the motor or doing regular maintanence. 1993 Toyota Pickup Service Manual Engine: On this Page of Wikipedia, here you will find information on the R-series, the motors that powered the Hiluxes for many generations. Toyota R engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A bit of information of the 3VZ-E V6 found in Hiluxes can also be read here. Toyota VZ engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This link contains a bit of both and others. Toyota: Deciphering Engine Applications 2SE, 3SFE, 3SGE, 3SGTE, and 5SFE: Engine Builder Timing Chains and guides The 22R series had dual row timing chains, up until 1983. This leaves the motor with one chain and required the timing chain guides to be replaced more often. Generally they last around "90-100k miles", but depending on driving styles, how aggressive you drive, and how much driving you do, they can break at 50k or even last up to 300k miles. If your guides break and you let it go, eventually the timing chain shall wear through the timing cover, into the water pump, and ultimately destroy the motor through the mix of water and oil. If you act soon enough, you can probably save the motor from rust and bearing damage. Most of the time you can do the timing chain job without removing the head and doing a headgasket, most prefer it that way. http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1993/engine/8timingch.pdf 22R/RE/REC/RET Timing Chain Replacement Instructions http://www.engnbldr.com Headgaskets The R and VZ motors were never perfect. Neglected, they will end up damaged, some how. Of course they will run, but will it run fine? Probably not. The 3VZ-E's issue was the BHG that plagued it. Factory torque specs weren't high enough, which went the same for the Toyota 6 cylinder M series. Toyota had a service bulletin, and if elligible, you may have your headgasket changed for free (as far as I know). Aside from the HG itself, even lack of cooling will push the 3VZ-E's HG over the edge. So it's a good idea to keep your cooling system in check. Any other general information can also be found here.
