I have a 1984 Toyota pickup that has sat for 7 or 8 years. I can start by holding the butterfly choke closed and it will stay running as long as I keep the rpm's up. Once i let off the gas it won't idle and won't start again unless I hold the choke butterfly closed. We rebuilt the carburetor and still has a problem. Has anyone experienced this an can tell me what to check? Thanks Randy
Check the anti-diesel solenoid. On the side of the carb. On my 81 I lost the ground to it somewhere in the system and it took many many hours of replacing things before figuring it out. On my 86... as soon as I had a "wont idle" moment, I checked for ground - good. Checked for power - no pwer...SCORE! Same problem on both trucks....Fixed. Yours has been sitting, so it could b something else, but its worth a shot.
I know it cuts fuel to the idle circuit, but when it would intermittently go out will driving it would bog and buck, and die if I stopped. Learning how to brake and hold the throttle up at stops was good training, lol. I drove my integra with a blown headgasket for a year using that skill, lol.
