check ATF running or not?

    I know to check auto tranny fluid when it's hot, but -- while engine's running or not? Am seeing advice both ways. What's the real answer? 1988 if it matters.

    Hot and running in park. I've never heard another way. I wonder what other ways there could be... Have to make sure the fluid is expanded and the converter is full.
