how much of a difference is there between the 4 and 5 speeed trans i would like to find a 5 speed but havent came across one yet let me no thanks
The difference is well worth the money. Im being reminded lately of how lousy a 4spd is again. (originally a 4spd, swapped in a 5 speed, then blew it up and put a 4spd back it) A 5spd helps strech those freeway miles and keeps the engine turning noticably slower at the same freeway speed. Id reccomend a w58, just because its one of the best 5speeds toyota made rwd. It almost bolts in and can be found used fairly eaisily.
thanks for the in put where could i go about finding on and how much are we looking at spending im up north and everything is 4wd so been having trouble let me no or i would evem have one shipped in
Here. About the cost of a JY one. http://houston.craigslist.org/pts/1654004883.html Look in junkyards for 82 and up NON-turbo supra or any 5 speed Cressida. (channelviews like 10 miles from me.) You will also need a bellhousing off of a 22R with any w series transmission. The bolt pattern is unmistakeable. I got mine off of a 4wd 88ish pickup.
I've ran my 4spd on the highway almost exclusively, mileage is good and runs good.. of course the 307 in the rear sure helps..
are there any ratio differences with the 4 n 5 speeds?? i hear theyre the sme cept the 5 has an extra gear
depends which 4 speed you have. but thats the gist of it. an extra gear to drop the revs. they usually had different rear end ratios to accomdate the lack of overdrive for freeway use. so if you swap the rear and trans, youd have a quick little setup
yeah my old works mechanic told me to use a 4 speed with a 3.07 in the rear. but my homie said that rear would need alot of power to be quick!
thats exactly it. lack of power can be made up for by gear. after you start making power, you can drop to 3.73s lol
I have trans with many extras for sale .... (engine and all) 200 for the whole lot is being requested.
from what ive heard, the 307's were too low for a 22r if your gonna race it.. most people here use the 4.56's or a 4.38's.. and theyre running full set-ups with race fuel. think a fully built 22r with a 307 will kill??
I think you have it backwards. 3.07 is an economy gear. My 94 mustang has 2.73's. with 300 Lb ft of torque, its still a slow dog! 3.07 are real close to that. Now my truck came with 3.42's. If I wanted a "all around, decent mileage, decent power" gear I would like a 3.55. 3.73 is the next closest thing to it. Now if you wanted to go fast, nothing beats a 4.10-4.30. Only downfall is a hit in gas mileage. Some 5 speeds are truck boxes. With WIDE gearsets and big RPM drops between shifts. Some 5 speeds have sports car gear ratios, that shift nice and have a nice tall 5th.
I find the 307's perfect for highway cruising, if and when I change out to a 5spd I think I'll keep it..
i know that the 4.56's give good acceleration and stuff, but with a beefy engine and a 3.07 in the rear... think ill give some comp??i mean if the torque can pull that rear wouldnt i have less shift points and more accel?
now youre getting into work required vs time spent shifting.... almost anybody you talk to at the strip or really any racing will tell you that they are running high 3's to low to mid 4's for the gearing ... My car turns half the RPMS the truck did cutting my shifting by quite a bit and even though the car was quick I still think the truck would be quicker down the quarter.
yea...... im having a hard time deciding what to do about my gearing..... i know the 3:07 is gonna give me better top end and fuel eco..... but i know i'd like to trim some performance robbing long gears between shifts. i could go with the 7.5 axle and do a 3:56 tacoma third or go a little more lower and do the original 3:73 gears.... i think 4:10 would be too low for around here other than on the track....
so whats a good close tranny for 3.07? my homie keeps asking me to swap his locked 3.07 for my 4.56.. alot of people here love 4.56's..but i wanna try something different! over here our highest speed limit is 45!
