Just like the title says, I'm curious if this carburator will work on my pickup. I have a stock 20R in my 77 shortbed pick up and it will not pass smog. I have it at a local shop and the guy working on it generally knows his stuff. He recently put a NEW EGR valve on it (the valve I believe is remanufactured and cost $250! I hope I can return it) and he's saying something else is plugged up in the carb. So I went to my local wrecking yard and found a few TORE UP late 70's Yota pickups that had been stripped clean (although I did pick up a nice steering wheel) anyway I was walking around and I come across this old Corona. I think it was a 1979 and it had a 20R engine and all the smog stuff still on it AND the AC unit was still in it (I'm going back to pull the compressor) ANyway I took off the carb and EGR valve, my question is will they work? I'm posting pics below. Let me know what you guys think! EGR valve
Yeah should work just fine! Looks like a non emissions carb, good find. On another note, the Corona you speak of, I have a buddy looking for some parts, and if its a wagon, we may have business lol
technically yes it will bolt up. however, if you need to pass emissions you wont. might with all the crap thats supposed to come with that carb, but its a stocker... also its hard to tell from the pics, but it looks like its missing some throttle linkage bits, but you didnt take a pic from that side. im fairly certain the 78 corona used a linkage setup like your truck, and not a cable. if your gonna stick with the stock carb, return that, and rebuild yours. the stock carbs REALLY dont like to be F'd with or jury-rigged, and it seemed like every other week in the mid-70's to mid-80's they changed the vacuum config and emissions crap. sorry if im raining on your parade, but just trying to make you pull your hair out now rather then later. get a weber, problem solved, much happier you'll be.
Did they give you the results sheet for the smog test? Because sometimes they do and sometimes they don't, usually they mark what part/test has failed, in my case I checked/changed before going to the smog station all the emission crap even vacuum hoses, timing, plugs and lastly I bought one of those cheap eBay rebuild kits for the carburetor and I just followed the instructions according to the Haynes manual to rebuild it and the truck passed the smog test with" flying colors" as many people says.
My truck still has all the vacum lines and other smog stuff on it, the guy who's working on my truck said that the EGR was no good and my NOX was high (too high to pass) so that's why I grabbed this EGR. Also my test showed I was running really rich and my CO's were too high to pass, in fact I got a "Gross Pollutor" score on one of my tests. At this point seeing as how the shops had it a couple weeks I'm thinking about other options. I might try putting a new CAT on it, that usually get's you ALOT closer to passing without even fixing everything else. I'm hoping that the new EGR I got and the new carb WITH all my emissions stuff will go together, the COrona had like some linkage AND a cable, all of which I disconnected because my truck has all that stuff. Maybe I'll take a pic of my trucks carb and post it, so you can see everything else I'm working with. Thanks for the input non the less guys! Also, I'm starting to warm up to getting a Weber.
cable was for the auto tranny also look into the california emissions certified 32/36. same size as the stock carb, cept better in every way.
A weber will solve alot of your problems. I put a weber on mine after the stock one started to take crap, and I'm alot happier because of it. Rebuilding the stock carb wouldn't be a hard but I wouldn't waste the time. Thats my 2 cents. Much Luck.
