for my aluminum wheels i started with coarse steel wool (my wheels were oxidized) and worked my way down thro the levels of coarseness to fine steel,(soapy water the whole time) then to get the smallest grooves out i finished with 2k grit paper. then i went around the wheels twice with mothers aluminum polish. i recommend a drill attachment. my hands and fingers were hurting by wheels 3.

The way i polsied all my rims and whatever i want to polish is. 320/400 grit wet or dry sand paper i wet sanded with soap until i cant see the small lines anymore this is the longest part...then i jumped to 600 grit 1000 grit then 2000 when i reach 2000 i make sure i cover every single part. Then use mothers aluminum polish and did it by hand...good luck yes your fingers will bleed. You can use power tools but they dont get every inch of the rims and in tight spots...

was just wondering about polishing alloys? same process? sand in different grits then throw on some aluminum polish? will that polish work on alloy?

You can use regular rubbing compound and a buffer to get the large areas and finish up with a good metal polish. worked great on the aluminum wheels on big rigs. Whatever you decide to go with, make sure you seal the wheels with something after polishing or you'll be doing it all over again VERY quickly.

You can also use the Mother's Powerball to polish up those hard to reach places.
