I've been doing some cleanup on an '89 22R and valve cover.

But still not quite there sooo... Here is how I decided to sand the factory rough casting edges on the flange for a cleaner look. (after rough sanding, most of the cover had to be done like this):

Here it is after a bunch of sanding by hand with 180 grit:

It's still not done. I'll post up more pics when I decide to call it good. I know this has been done before, I just wanted to share some pics after spending hours sanding on the thing. Feel free to jack my thread with pics of your own valve cover cleanup if you want to out shine me. :waytogo:

I did a valve cover by hand once; just worked on it every now and then when I had spare time until I got tired of it. Took me about a year to get it to a mirror shine.

 Yeah, the way this is going mine will be a mirror shine in a year or so. It's kinda addictive. It's getting better and better, but it is still a ways from a mirror shine. I still have a good portion of the factory orange peel texture there. That stuff is hard to sand off. I want this thing to shine like a new dime!:D I don't know how I'll keep it looking that way though, maybe clear powder coat it when I'm done, or just have to re-polish it now and then.

well you have alot of rust to get rid of also......'

Where did you get that performance distributor and does it require a MSD coil to run that?

    Just curious ......................

 I gotta say, at first I was thinking that was a pretty rude comment... Then I looked back and saw the background in the first pic. Dude, that's not my truck. But thanks for noticing. That's just some bare 4x4 frame in my friends yard that could use a lot of love. My truck is in the second pic. I should pick better backgrounds. Of course that's what you noticed...

www.PerformanceDistributors.com is the best place to get a D.U.I. as they will custom build it to suit your needs. I bought one for my '79 a couple years ago and I think it was well worth it. They do not require an MSD. They are WAY simpler wiring than an MSD ignition. They only require one wire to hook up. They are 50,000 volts. They definitely give you power you can feel. I will be doing a full write up on that new D.U.I. soon.
