So my truck came with the 3.0 v6 so it has the 4cyl turbo/v6 rear end. The back half that I acquired from a buddy came with a 4 cyl rear end that was already setup for the four link. My question is.....can I take the 3rd member out of my V6 rear housing and swap it into the 4cyl housing. If so....what do I need to complete this swap? Thanks in advance!
Direct bolt in if the other rear axle is a G code. Easiest way to tell at a glance is to look at the drain plug on the housing. If it's on the drivers side it's an 8" G code so all is well, if it's on the passenger side it's a 7.5" and th V6 3rd won't fit.
turbo/v6 were 8in 2wd were 7.5in or if u wanted better gears in the 4link 7.5 rear end -u can find the front diff gears from a 4wd 4runner. they usually come in 411, 430, 456, if ur lucky, can find a 488 i believe. u have to rebuild it tho its what i did.
Not all 2wd were 7.5". Odds are if the truck had efi and/or a 5 speed trans yes it probably has a 7.5" diff but 4 speed trucks normally got the g code 8" with 3.07 gears to make up for the lack of overdrive. In the 4 wheel drive world there are 4.10, 4.30, 4.56 and 4.88 7.5" gears available in independent front differentials. Typically 4.10 is in any truck or 4runner equipped with a manual trans. 4.30 is found in 4 cylinder automatic transmission equipped rigs. 4.56 is in V6 automatic rigs and 4.88 is in 4 runners equipped with a V6, automatic transmission, 31" tires and factory spare tire carrier.
