Alright so ive looked around and found very little info on the 3VZ and well i wana know if its worth keeping. Ive read many times that theyre horrible with head gaskets. My question is, is the gasket problem only with the factory one? or does it have some other things goin on to where it jus keeps blowing em. and also is there any aftermarket support for that engine, if its even worth keeping.
There are lots of aftermarket parts. I had the 3vz in mine and my piston rings cooked themself and i lost compression in 3 cylinders. When they run there awsome..... but other than that i was never a fan of it.
not much better then a 22re in my opinion. only 145hp, a few bolt ons and you got that with what you already got.
well honestly im not looking for much power, i mean an intake and maybe headers is all il get along with an exhaust. i just need something that i wont have to build and rebuild and repair, and so on. can it be dependable? I mean i aint guna beat the **** out of it, its just guna be my daily so yea.
3.4L makes more power, more mileage and better reliability than the 3.0 I'm not bagging you, but i'm pretty sure you can keep good maintanence. It can be dependable! Lol, intake and exhaust, you should be pretty good!
i like my 3vz. i have an intake and exhaust, and mine seems like it wants to get up and go. i also have alot less weight, but seems like with a few bolt ons, there should be enough power there for a dd.
well i would do a swap to the 3.4 but idk if itl pass smog. As most kno cali=mandatory smog. honestly i mainly wana kno what the problem is with the head gaskets, the intake and exhaust is guna be just for sound, no performance reasons on my part. i would like a 22RE just cuz of all the praise i see it has, and it seems to offer more clearance for bagging.
if your after reliability it'd be silly to put anything other then a 2xr in there. 400k with basic maintenance, is not a joke, its a fact. i even personally know a couple people with over 600k, and counting. best i have is a hair over 300k, and still going strong despite having swallowed a washer into the #3 cyl a month ago. only rep the 3vz has is a bad one.
well thats the ****, mine has about 405K, but idk if its been rebuilt before or not. Im still leaning towards the 22RE tho.
If you already have the 3vz, there is no reason to swap down to the 22re or otherwise. Yes, it only has 15 or so more horsepower, but it has gobs more torque. D.O.A. racing makes internals for the engine, and once the headgasket issue is resolved it is a very dependable engine. I bought a 95 4runner a few years ago that had low compression in the number 1 cylinder. After a valve job (not the head gasket) it runs great, and I got it for almost nothing because of it's need for a valve job. I also have a pickup with the 22re, and would never think of swapping out the 3vz for less.
So after the stock gasket is changed out theres no issue? It would be nice to do a rebuild on the engine. but idk if i wana invest in something thats guna take a dump on me
My 1990 SR5 V6 Auto 4x4 came stock with the 3VZ 3.0L engine, I bought it with 215k on the clock. It seems to have had the timing belt done a few times, as there are notations on the tb case sticker. The seller had no information on the truck when I bought it as in owner's manual, past maintenance records, etc. I've begun just changing all the fluids, adding new tires, shocks, and intend to get it a full tuneup ASAP. I'm glad it has torque because I had questioned my mindset of getting the 3.0L engine, as I know of the head gasket issue before owing it. This one must have had it's replaced by now,no? I'd like the 22RE as the next engine in my truck if this goes beyond repair in the future. Just for a point of interest my Dad has a 1991 Chevy Lumina with 514K on the clock with NO major mechanical work ever done on it Can you believe when he contacted GM about it, they sent him a letter of 'congratulations' that offered him a free oil change the next time he brought his car in for service at a Chevy dealer. My Dad just laughed because the car has never been in a dealership since the day he drove it out! He's done all his own work on it. He used to drive it all over the Country on business and pleasure visiting family. Now a days it's his 'local ride' as he bought a 2001 Lumina with 71k on the clock cheap and is giving that one the high mileage treatment
