Lately when backing in, whenever I go into drive from reverse, I'll get a clank, kinda like when someone strikes a bell.
    only from R to D.
My friend said it could be the u-joint being bad.

I wouldn't be too surprised, considering the lowered angle and intense winter conditions presented this past year.

exactly how tough is it to do this and replace it?
May consider grabbing the joint from rockauto or something.

Could be the ujoint or possibly slop in the third member, grab hold of the driveshaft near the joint you wanna chaeck and see if you have any slop up and down, side to side, and clockwise, counter clockwise, if so its probably due for replacing.
Not difficult to replace if you have a press, arbor press, or vise, and hammer and drift, just keep the shaft and yoke in phase so not to throw the balance off.

You've got a two piece and an auto tranny right?

If so there are three u joints to replace, and you'll likely find that they aren't the problem.

I've been trying to track down the exact cause of this clunk for over two years, and when finally taken to a tranny shop, they said that it was an annoyance but not anything worth going after.

The previous owner had the tranny rebuilt, I have the paperwork. I've replaced all three u joints, carrier bearing, and rebuilt the rearend. It still makes the noise. If I crawl under the truck and have someone else shift, the driveshaft doesn't move much, leading me to believe the old timer transmission guy that the noise comes from excessive movement in the planetary gears.

I've chosen to live with it.

    we both have the A43D.
I got under the truck today and checked the last u-joint right off the differential. I played with it a bit, acted as if it were reverse and then forward, and the issue would be the joint. I looked close and see a slight amount of "jiggle".
I can easily unbolt the rear half of the driveshaft and get to it, but I believe I'll have to mess with a press.

Lit, you can take a peek at the u-joint closely along the x and y axis of the joint (the cross) and you may see some play.

beradg252, how exactly did you do this?

Yes, that is how it is done. I think that you will still find some movement in the U joint after the new one is in. It may be tighter, but out of the hundred or so I've installed over the years, they all had a bit of visible play.
If not, they were installed incorrectly and the needle bearings had fallen off in the cap and gotten crushed....
Believe me, my clunk or clang or whatever it is, is in the tranny. I'd love to be wrong about yours though.

It's definitely not from the tranny. It's from the driveshaft (itself) taking the shock from the u-joint.

I literally knocked on the driveshaft (interesting, its hollow!) and it recreated the same sound.

And yes, I understand the slight play if I had a new u-joint. This one has... quite alot. I'll attempt to take a vid of it tomorrow.

BELOW is copy and pasted from RockAuto.com of my options. I'm unsure of which one to choose. If you need to look for yourself. ...
