can a toyota 2wd transmission be converted to a 4wd simply by unbolting the tailshaft and bolting a transfer case on? if not, is there any way to convert a 2wd transmission to 4wd?
No, you can't simply change the tailshaft, the 4x4 trans uses a shorter mainshaft, to convert the 2wd trans would require changing the main shaft, then using a 4x4 tailhousing that made to bolt to the transfer case.
ummm..... to be honest man you'd be saving yourself allot of headache, time, and whatever other involved effort by just finding a good 4x trans. its doable but to just about anyone its not worth the effort involved....... if you are really in need of a trans, you should look around out here in cali for a deal on one..... usually see em on craigs for anywhere from 50 bucks and up.....
well my 2wd tranny is the a340e and my 4runner tranny is the a340h. what all has to be done to swap the main shaft since that's what i have to do?
but how would i go about it. does anybody have any experience with it or is it all heresay? does anybody actually know how to go about it?
