Heres a question, probably a stupid one: Is it possible to replace some of the gears in a transmission with aftermarket ones that are a little faster (as in higher geared). I have a 5 speed (Not original and not sure what the code for it is) in front of a 3.07 rear. I have an extra 5 speed just sitting there not doing anything. I was wondering if I could build that one to squeeze more mileage out of the truck and just swap the trannys when I was done building it. Stupid question, or no?

I'm not exactly sure what your purpose for trying this would be... I mean I'm sure it's 'possible' to swap a gear out. But if you want to make a faster truck, this would not be very effective at all..

And if you're trying to get better mileage (to save money I assume) again this would not be practical and most likely cost a pretty penny..

I wasnt trying to make the truck faster, it was with fuel economy in mind. Im just curious as to what my options are.

A W58 is the only easy option you have to gain a higher 5th gear. I'm running a W58 in a truck that came stock with 3.07's. I swapped the 3.07's out for 4.10's prior to swapping the 4 speed for the W58 so I can't speak for the exact rpm range it would run in. I can say it's made the truck into a decent driver even with smallish 195/60/15's.
