I currently have an 86 4x4 that has a 7m-gte motor (80's supra motor, ~230hp/240tq and growing) and a transmission that has 200k on the clock and a howling input shaft. Call me crazy, but this truck is my daily driver right now, so I am nervous about the tranny breaking. I am on a slight budget, but can afford a new trans. Would the better option be to buy a better trans to hold the extra power or to buy another stock one for the time being and build the busted one later? Also, how about the rearend? Is this something that I will have to swap for something stronger? p.s. I would like to keep the 4x4 if possible because I like the idea and flexibility of a 4WD supra-truck.
the 4wd is going to make it more expensive. If it were 2wd I'd say just swap another W5x and be done with it (good for 350-400hp depending on how you drive) but 4x4 means a little more work and fewer options. The other option is to just replace the input shaft bearing. toyopartsman on toyotanation is a dealer parts guy and he gets TN people near-cost pricing and cheap shipping. There's a similar guy on supraforums I think. Just have as much info about the trans as you can, if it's the factory trans just have the VIN
Thanks for the input kamesama. Just got a W56 transmission last week for the time being, and am going to take the old tranny apart to diagnose what is wrong with it and maybe fix it to have a second one on hand. I will have to check out your lead for parts, sounds like a good person to know and I really appreciate you helping me out.
