As some of you know my 78 was smashed up by a drunk. I had a Celica 5sp manual in it. Will that transmission mount up to a 1979 4x4 4spd. 1979 Toyota Classic 4x4 Short Bed Sport. If I purchase the 4x4 I would like to put a 5spd manual in it.

 

physically yes, the celica 5spd will bolt to the 79 4x4 provided its a 20/22R engine in the 79, but it won't work with the transfer case. The 4x4 used a married trans/tranfer case unit, to make the celica 5spd work it would need a different main shaft, tail housing, and the correct transfer case to fit the tail housing used because of shift fork arrangement.
You'd be better off just finding a 4x4 5spd setup to swap in.

 

Ok thanks. The 4spd on the freeway is not the preferred setup. Did they make a 5spd that would work with the 79 20r engine and is it easy to get?

 

just to clarify, did you want it to be 4wd or 2wd?

if you wanted it 2wd you could put the celica transmission in it, but like nook said if you wanted 4wd you would pretty much need a 4wd trans/transfer case.

edit, craigslist has them all the time(here anyways) usualy range from 150-300 depending on which model trans/transfer case it is.
