Hi all. First, this forum is awesome! It's very encouraging with good info and as people have mentioned there is little flaming and bs as with many forums. Usually i would just lurk and get the info i need but i feel obliged to get involved! I picked up a first gen Hilux about a month ago after looking around at small trucks, mainly Datsun 520/620 (prob an evil word here, haha). By pure coincidence, i searched "hilux" on the Portland CL ads and found my truck. It was cheap and appeared to be complete with obvious work involved, but still.. cheap! I've always wanted a Toyota whatever - vintage, modern, truck, car.. didn't matter. But to find this one feels like fate! I can't wait to get it running and just drive it. Short term plans are do a static drop, nice rims, clean up the paint a bit.. i just need to gather a few more items to really start workin on it. Here are a few pics to start, i'll try to take more soon.
did the axe come with it!? sweet truck man i'm super jealous! i've also got an 18r-c in my truck so if you need any help finding parts for it holler.
Welcome!!! Nice Hilux you found there!!! It will look sharp once you get it all together. I'll look forward to that time. I have family up in King County (Renton, Kent, & West Seattle). Rick
Nice find body looks to be in good shape damage wise . You have any serious rust or just the regular surface build up not often you find those trucks with a complete grill and bumper and a working tailgate
hey welcome!! your truck is looking good. cant wait to see the build. Where in Seattle are you? Im in Queen anne myself
Thanks for all the welcomes! I'm happy to finally be in the Toyota clan. Brovender - lol! yes the axe and other assorted goodies were scattered under the seat. I'll post a pic.. folding shovel, old chains, a Chiltons manual (thank god i have something to guide me!) and even some old coins on the rusty drivers' floor. The one had gotten eaten away where the words look like they say N GOD WE RUST. i should make bumperstickers of that! haha On the parts i might need some guidance. It has been a bit hacked in to.. at some point (prob 80s?) they cut the hard fuel line and put in a super loud elec pump on the fender. It does work, tho, but it sounds like ur under attack every time the key is on! I pulled the old pump (it was still mounted on there robbing power!!) and have searched online but the only ones i can tell are a match with the small return line outlet are in Asia and shipping is a bit high. Is the return even necessary? I'd like to keep it stock for now as much as possible. Scrub88 - i love your truck.. i have seen it looking around threads on wheels and such. The serious rust i know of so far is the drivers floor is gone, and there are a few places on the bed (esp the front left where it broke thru the body side) that will be an issue. Overall the bed seems solid but i'm sure there is a bunch lurking in seams, etc 85pickamatruck - i'm in the far NW corner of Seattle. Bitter Lake area, north of Greenwood. I can't wait to be able to drive it to meets and such. I bet having your small pickup is nice on QA! I know how parking gets on the hill So yesterday after posting this I went out and tried to jump the solenoid to test it and it cranked the engine over! Prob the first time it's moved in several years. I have already gone over the fuel tank - new hoses, cleaned all hard lines and components, Marine Cleaned the tank, and reinstalled it. I had checked the pump and it's ok. Carb is unknown, as is the ignition. Next is to figure out why the ign switch doesn't seem to work (maybe i didn't fully engage the clutch??). I'm refinishing the wheels, hubcaps and actually found 14" whitewalls! it doesn't really show it at this angle, but this is the coin Gotta love the old dish soap bottle overflow tank! ha
U may have to just dive in on the wiring and chase down some connections and see what's faulty and corroded ..guess as you no its part of dealing with the aged and seasoned toyotas
Nice find, bro and welcome to TM ... I agree, the windshield will prob be the hardest thing to find compared to everything else, which really shouldn't be that much of a problem ... Lookin' forward to a build thread from ya ...
you're definitely gonna want that return line. the best place i've found for parts is rockauto.com. look under 1974 toyota pickup 2.0 L4. so far i've had luck with my parts being correct except for the valve cover gasket. but sweet collection of stuff and coin man! if you make the stickers be sure to send one my way!
