So this is the problem I'm having at the moment. Truck runs great (20r) Until I get to about 3/4 throttle, then it dose this sputter backfire type thing. Dose anyone have any suggestions. 1977 2wd Toyota hilux. Bought it a month ago

Sounds like the timing may be too fast so when the mechanical advance kicks in it backfires. Or there is a clogged main jet so it goes lean when on the secondary circuit.

I'm in pasco but I'm out till Thursday. When I'm back home I'll check it out for you if you haven't figured it out yet.

Start off with the timing. Easy to check. Dont start throwing parts at it if it youre not sure thats the problem

Sounds to me like the secondary is not opening, or possibly clogged jet as was mentioned earlier.

Truck didn't sound wonderful when you drove away so I figure you must have tinkered with it a bit and got it dialed in?

Yea was still running rough but I knew it was timing so instead of using the fine tune point we were messing with I just loosened the distributor and swissted it till it was close to perfect now it runs like a champ again:clapping:
