Hello All. Just picked up a 75 and there is a lot of play with the steering. Any recommendations on what to target first?
have someone help you out while you look at all the steering components under it and have them turn the steering wheel back and forth... look at all your tie rods and see where the slop is at. look at your idler arm as well... sometimes the bushings are wiped out on em and cause a huge amount of play..
For the hilux steering, do like SD said and check everything for slop. Some of it may be in the steering box itself. There is an adjuster with lock nut on the top of the box. Also check the control arm bushings and ball joints. Most likely its a worn out tie rod some place. And you gotta post some big pics of that truck. It looks like it has 82-85 Celica Supra/GTS fender flares. I have played around with the same idea. Some better pics of the flares would be awesome. It works really well with the starion rims it has
Thanks for the tips and will work on addressing the steering play. I purchased the truck with the flares installed. There are still some gaps between the fenders and flares which I plan on fixing. I am currently polishing the lips of the starions and hopefully will get it done by this weekend. Taking me longer than expected due to years of dirt caked on the wheels.
Check your rag joint coupler on steering shaft were it connects to the steering box if your truck has one Small rubber disk likes to get old and soft .
Some Pics Before I lowered the rears 3". Cut springs stock front springs 2 1/2 turns equates to 3.5" drop. Bumper deleted after..
Center caps Current project polishing center caps I scored on at Santos Toy Shop in Sacramento. He has sic ass rides and many of you may have seen his Orange RHD Hilux.
I saw. I have a few pics on my phone of it. I think he has the same color as mine. I've debated reprinting but I like how the 35 year old paint still shines up.
I like the patina on my truck. Thinking about sanding it and spray with clear rust inhibitors then clear coat. Gotta figure out the best way to keep the patina without compromising the clear coat cause I hear if not done right clear coat will peel away.
My buddy does that for old stuff. He's a painter. He sands them with 1000 grit and clears right over. Sometimes he adds to the patina by putting small patches of a other color and wet sanding it to look like its under the color not over. Ill ask him more details about it. I think the clear on the rust is the biggest area of concern.
