so I bought a new motor for my truck, its an older 22r motor with dual timing chain. all the kits im looking at say 79 to 82, I was told the motor is an 83, and in 84 they went to single timing chain.. will i be ok ordering the kit for the 79 to 82 motors ??? and do these even really need timing chains like the single row ones do ? the motor was well kept but probably original chain, and the owner told me he scrapped the car and he thought he needed to replace the timing chain but it never made any noise or evidence that it was due..

nice, i figured. I think im just going to drop the motor in and run it for a while untill it has an issue or i save up enough for my v8 swap that ive been putting off forever.

IMO - all double chain hardware is the same. all single chain hardware is the same. u cannot swap parts between the two.

My '82 had a double row. Never had a problem. I remember reading somewhere that they went to single row for cost and to increase service revenue. Lol.
I doubt it. But good theory.

You can get double row conversion kits and timing covers at LC engineering or engine bldr

ok I guess I wasnt clear. MY motor IS DOUBLE row. Im not swapping to single. Im just saying that online the kits specify 78 to 82 for double and 85 to 94 for single. the kits that say 83 and 84 on them are mixed between single and double. I want to just order the 78 to 82 kit but i didnt know if there was a small difference in the 83 or 84 models.

Dont think there is 84 was last year before they went to the laser block so that means your deck height/block height is the same from 1975 to 1984-11.280 inches " so I think your in the clear if u got a new kit from any of the years listed above
Cause if u got a double row then u got the clearance issue outta the way
And any of the double chains kits 84 and below should work

As for the 84 up laser block its deck height is 11.09 < reference for timing chain length differences

And in all honesty if the chain looks healthy chances are u can rock it for along time my chain has 220 thousand miles on it and yes I reinstalled in my new motor and I beat the crap out of it !
