ok so I am putting my engine back together, new pistons and rings, Ill post pics of the shattered ones later. But for now I need to know any tips or tricks to get my timing chain sprocket onto the cam !?!?!? even when I push on the tensioner to release the chain its not long enough to get it on the sprocket !!

The chain is new but its been on there before so I know its not too short.. any help please!?!?!? thanks !

Ive never done a Toyota timing chain, but on a GM motor i put the 2 gears in the chain, letting the teeth hold them in and hold them up and start the bolts. Kind of a one shot deal. Once there both bolts are started i tighten em up. Know what i mean?

before you install the tensioner, compress it with tape or something similar, then thatll make everything wayyy easier..

is your motor in the vehicle or out? i got most accessories off my truck the past two days.

    wait a sec...

i just re-read your original post.

did you take the cam sprocket off the chain?

if you did you might have to take the timing cover off to properly set the timing chain back up.

put the sprocket in the chain, then depress the tensioner. there will NEVER be enuff slack to put the chain over the cam gear.

i would make damm sure the pass side of the chain is tight and both the head n block are at tdc when putting stuff together.

I JUST pulled my TC components out. ShoNuff is right, there is no slack enough to pull it over. what you will end up doing is having the guides and tensioner out, including teh lil bolts. place the chain over the sprockets(the sprockets are out of the motor), then "place" the chain and sprocket assembly over the crank and cam to make sure they are correctly aligned. then when you accomplish that and are sure it is placed correctly, slide both sprockets onto the shafts simultaneously. then you can add the tensioner(compressed) and guides on next.

good luck, i'm just waiting for parts!

btw did you get your oil pan off? i got mine disconnected but i cant get it out from the truck

cin, you have to take your crossmember off and your pitman arm off. also once again my timing cover is on my engine, it never came off the gears never left the chain I zip tied it so it would stay on the same teeth.

im not so sure about the trucks but on a celica, you can put a jack on the tranny bell housing and jack it up. that gives you just enuff room to get the oil pan out.

but ive upgraded to the right tools now. if im going that far ill just pull the motor.
