I'm going to pave this thread here to dedicate current, past, future, and any autocrossers that will use their trucks in these competitions.

I'm attempting to get myself deeper into this motorsport, currently the sport is dying off in my area. Currently, being 17 requires a waiver and that's a little too much work for me. BUT I was told I just need both parents to sign the waiver, EASY. :waytogo:

My current DD setup is 215/60/16's up front, trimmed bumpstops, B/J flipped, and eased torsion bars. with this set up, i'm significantly lowered, but instead of riding on bumpstops, I have allowed a small bit of travel, to prevent rubbing still, and to allow the truck to "roll into camber" and actually let the outside tire GRIP.

Currently, the truck feels good with 215's, but the tires that came with the wheels have outside shoulder wear, so theoretically, major low speed cornering may be affected. I have 65's in the rear, so my low end may be affected, although that will allow me to make the best of staying in 1st gear.

Let this thread live! I encourage everyone and anyone to try this motorsport! Contact your local SCCA and auto-clubs, and good luck to all who try! :waytogo:

id be scared $hitless to autox in a bj flipped truck.

the stress my celica see's from daily use would rip them lil bolts right out. I can only imagine what a season of autox would do.

word to the wise: dont mention your flipped ball joints to the tech inspector, insta fail fo sho.

you'll spend about 2 sec in 1st, then the rest of the time will be 2nd with the brief 3rd depending on track setup. you really dont want any "roll" from the body in autox, ideally you want something barely off the ground that stays flat no matter how hard you push it. a autox setup really sucks in any other environment other then gymkhana, ie: daily driving.

I am trying to bust your balls here. Id hate to see you hurt yourself or your truck attempting to race it. go watch a couple events, pay special attention to how the cars "move" while cornering. If your really lucky, you might be able to hitch a ride with a experienced racer. while your there watching, see if you can get your truck inspected, you'd be surprised as to what they fail you for. also read the rule book which you can download at your local scca site. you may not even be able to enter with your truck. I know locally a guy had to whine and write letters to get his hopped up taco x-runner into autox race, ended up placing well tho.

in no way shape or form am i saying dont go for this, do it, I do. all im trying to say is, you will do things for a mini, you would never ever do for a autox car/truck. 2 completly different ways to build a car.

    in my humble opinion...

go buy a celica or mr2 to autox. build your mini up to tow it to the track.

    or...

undo some of the "less safe" mini upgrades for a modest static drop, add some sway bars and 14's with 50-60 series tires. then end up with a streetable truck that wont lose its ass on a parking lot filled with cones.

here is a full retard prepared mr2

here is the incar video from his class winning run... note the body roll, corner speed, and how stupid fast that lil bucket changes direction.

autox car= a car that will do 10-40-10mph in a heartbeat and change direction without slowing.

Yeah i know, I was spectating all sunday, under the sun.. in the middle of the airfield.

i wanted "slight" to none roll because if the tires didn't get to "roll" into camber, in the middle of my turning, it'll just understeer.
if anything, i could undo the BJ flip before the event.

Back in colorado I ran my truck in a rally cross compitition...

It was fun, no doubt. But the wheelbase, slow steering, narrow frame and overall too long feeling made me kill cones.

I've autocrossed my SVX(subaru) 240sx and intend on my truck, drifting is more where the truck is being built though.

How wide is a thunderbird rear end? It'd be pretty easy to retrofit one into one of these...as long as your not afraid to use some fire, electricity, and sharp things to do it.....IRS anyone?

lol we had a Z28 old school camaro take the fastest legal car in the AutoX

the G8 and Corvette's had some issues.

my friends in the 02 WRX wagon and 92 GTI got about 42-43 second runs, which was considered fast.
Fellow friend in his STi got about 41 seconds, which was pretty good considering he was on all seasons.

The Formula SAE car got about 30-31 second runs, so that's blazing it.

some old Dodge Stratus got a 60 second run.

I'm pretty confident in myself if i tried.

I had planned on running autocross this passed Saturday. Had the truck up on stands working on the exhaust while the wife and niece pulled the lights etc so they could paint it. Felt slightly dizzy laying on the creeper, rolled out and stood up only to damned near pass out. Blood sugar took a dive from sweating all the sugar out of my system in the sun. Truck Sat on jackstands all weekend till I felt better Sunday am and put it together to drive to work.

It's funny watching the event. I have a buddy that runs a gokart on crack, its an A mod with a 750 cc bike engine, fully independent suspension etc. Damned missile on the track. There is a guy with a completely ridiculous new better that can't drive to save his ass. Zero finesse the throttle is a light switch to him. There is an older guy with a newer 4 door BMW that can flat out drive! He beats that car like he hates it then drives it home, he's great to watch.

I'm looking forward to getting my truck out there next month, I have plenty of time to get it ready now. :D

The best time is unknown since we had a Formula SAE car (totally different class) and the results aren't posted up yet. The faster drivers with the faster cars got times of the low 60's and into the mid 50's. The course's initial start, multiple technical curves and twists allowed the underpowered cars to have an advantage (said truck driver... :D ) There were several prepared cars, such as the white EF in front of me (girl and father drove seperate heats) and it had suspension and Toyo Proxes. She ran a time of 63 before me, I think.
Welcome man :) I'll post up the other results when they get to it.

    Thanks man :)

Oh man, should've done it! I enjoy autocrossing, I just never got everything ready and I wasn't 18 last year. So I needed my parents to be there (really?) and they of course, wouldn't wake up for that.
There's some crazy stuff out there, first time I also saw an old school Renault that was ready to race!
There was an SN95 Mustang out there that did pretty damn well, driven by an old couple, too.

What's your wheel and tire combo?
A good upgrade would be sway bars from the 1-ton Hiluxes.
In autocross, dependent on the course, I don't think I've ever left 2nd gear. Much tighter courses will leave you in 1st gear, but that's up to the driver and his/her experience.
Turn in early right before apexes in the slaloms to help the weight transfer to the outer tires.
    Smooth is fastest.

How's your intake and exhaust set up?

I've probably done the fastest 1st to 2nd shift ever in autocross compared to driving straight, lol.

I try my best to travel light, nothing like spring cleaning when you arrive at the location to prepare for tech inspections.

Bring lotsa water, a cooler would help keep drinks cool. Working the heats suck when you're dehydrated.

Around here the courses are pretty wide open so people have a better chance to screw up carrying too much speed into the corners. I spent a lot of time in 3rd last time and the next event will be even more open than that. :D

I only watched the last vid. Too bad you didn't have anyone filming at a stand point to watch the truck run the course. Cool vid by the way:waytogo:
