I have a rusted and dented tailgate and I want to replace it with a newer more sleek tailgate. Do you have any suggestions on specific tailgates that would fit?

 

Just get a tailgate skin. I dont think you can swap your tailgate with another from a different body style

 

Yeah i thought of that too. Does it involve lots of welding and grinding?

 

^^^yes, and bodywork......even if you were able to put on another years tailgate the body lines wouldnt match up or look right, just get a skin i have one on mine as well as a shaved handle, really smooths it out

 

Body work will do wonders with your tailgate. Just take your time and it may turn out to be one of the best parts of your truck

 

if it's perfectly undented and stuff, i wouldn't touch it.

 

You can get tailgate skins without the recessed area as well. I know Fbi minis carried all that but so does grant customs.

 

I also know for a fact you can buy a new oem gate from toyota for just over $200 and swap your parts over. Very easy to do.

how bad is the rust is rust on frame or just outer skin they are very easy to reskin!
remove outer and fill with poly or expander foam and roll new skin over i used 2mm zintec dont know what it called there.

 

this took me a day from start to filler ready!

 

The problem is that I do not have a welder or grinder but I might be able borrow one. This would be my first body work project and I do not want to mess it up. I will look into the Skins I really love the flat tailgate look. I just need to find a good site to purchase one. Give me suggestions of sites to buy from.

Great! This is now on my list of things to do. I need to look at my tailgate better. As I remember it the tailgate was pretty thrashed. I think it is dented pretty bad on both sides.

 

If yours is a bad as you say it is, I would looking into getting a new gate then put the smooth skin on it and be done. I would hate you see you put alot of time into your gate only to not be happy with it.

 

Yeah i agree, I might be able to find one from a salvage yard for a good price. I thought if I was going to buy a new one anyways why not try to find a '96 or similar if it would fit.
