ok, so i was thinking. yes, it hurt me lol. didn't toyota have the "TOYOTA" logo stamped into the tailgate skins of the older lux's? cause from what i've seen, it looks like they started painting them on. if i'm not mistaken, my uncle's old long bed toy(think it was maybe like a late 70's model)had the name pressed into it. anyway, i wanted to try to find an old tailgate and cut out just the "YO" part of the skin. and i wanted to have that "frenched" into my tailgate where that handle should be and relocate the handle inside the tailgate. i think it'd look pretty cool. had it in the wrong section... idk what i'm thinking!
my '82 sr5 shortbed is stamped. this is an example. a junkyard would be much cheaper the earlier years (I think pre-79) had a different font. so depending on how old-school you want it to look...
Thats exactly what I want to do with mine, except I want the whole name on mine. Its all just cutting and welding as I don't think there is a radical difference in the shape of the tailgate. Haven't researched it out yet though.
I was once told that reproduction ones are for certain reasons not allowed to have toyota stamped on them, the ones I know of were black and came with the correct sized letter stickers in black as well but were prone to peeling off so were ideally stencils for painting purpose
