Hi I was wondering how difficult it is to change out a transfer case. I have an 19 hundred and 88 4wd extra cab. If I go and unbolt it will fluid pour everywhere? What's the best way?
they are pretty simple, basically yes just unbolt it and slide it off. I drain the fluid from it as well as the trans just for the fact that its going to be a new tcase with new fluid, might as well put new fluid in the trans as well. If you are installing a used tcase you are going to put new fluid in it anyways so still change the trans fluid. Also make sure you get a new gasget for between the tcase and trans. beer..lots of beer
Well I have a spare case but may be able to fix this one. It still works but it is hard to get it out of 4wd (h4 to h2). I used to drift in the winter time and change to h4 mid-drift to gain traction. So I was wondering if I can work on it without taking it off the truck? And if I'm that lucky what could I replace (besides oil) to fix the shifting problem? Maybe a spring?
well those tcases dont have syncros in them like it transmissions....so im pretty sure you buggered the gears inside it..which mean you need to pull it, and crack the case. I would go through the spare case while its out of the truck, make sure its perfect and then just do a tcase swap...probably easier then trying to mess with the other one.
Yea I guess taking the spare one off my parts truck is the best way for me to learn how it works. I found LCEngineering has a nice looking rebuild kit for transfer cases too. I don't know if I want to spend much that's the thing.
if you get a chance look at marlincrawler.com as well....... shifting from 2wd hi to 4wd hi should not hurt things as long as there was enough slack in load to permit a smooth transition....... ive done it in snowy roads on allot of my trucks.... never hurt anything...... but like i said, its gotta be right in order not to hurt anything....
