I think he means inside of glass vs. outside of glass. I believe they are only for outside. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

    engine number

im trying to find out if my 81 4x4 has the original motor in it. the only numbers i can see on the block are 1906100 and 22r they are stamped in and are located on the front drivers side of the block. is there any way to decode the engine number?

I think if you call the dealership and give them engine code and vin they can tell you if they match. Im sure there is a website were you can do the same but im not cetain

i called the dealer and they could only tell me what i had already known which is the 22r is the correct engine for my truck. im just trying to figure out the year of the engine since the previous owner said it wasnt original. guess it really doesnt matter, just thought there was a way to decode the engine number just like the trans and gearing etc.
