I have a 1980 fujitsu ten TEQ am/fm radio. Same basic two knob from any of the trucks and cars. Got it in some car years ago. I have the wiring plugs but don't know where they should go. I have an fm modulator for headphone jacks, and would like to have a low draw deck to hear tunes. Plus it looks retro. It has 2 plugs. a 2 wire and a 4 wire. 2 wire is solid blue and white/black. Both are larger than the 4 wire wires. Those are black/red, solid red below that, black/white, then solid white. I assume the white/black is constant power. Blue solid to keyed power. Black/white to ground. Solid white to dome light. Solid red to + speaker. Black/red to - speaker. Does this sound correct? I tried looking up the model number and its too similar to modern stock radios. I will post a pic.
I don't wanna fry it and haven't put any power to it yet. Hoping it works. Its marked 1980 and was in a 78 car, so I assume it does if somebody put it there.
Hmm. when did they stop doing chassis grounds on audio speakers? If I remember correctly, some of the old stock and even some aftermarket radios used chassis ground for the speakers. I remember in Jr high I assumed which wire was which by color and ended up frying the radio in a 70's ford truck by wiring it wrong. If you can't find the diagram, it may be best to open it up and see where the wires go on the inside. See where each one terms on the board. Just a thought.
Also, in the 70's and early 80's, they did some odd things with speaker leads. I remember one that was a Sparko, or something like that. It was a cheapie, Checker Auto Parts radio that had a right and left positive wire but only one negative, if I remember correctly. u ran both negative speaker wires to the same negative wire on the radio.
What's the front look like? it's easier to search for these pre-Eclipse decks if I have a visual. Actually, I should ask what vehicle it came out of. That'd actually open up search possibilities
The white with black stripe looks to be your main power just saying because it looks like a larger gauge wire and back in the day or in current home stereos they used solid red or white for left or right positive and black with red or white strip for negative. If the stereo has a left or right balance selector that's what I would say it is. Not 100% on the power thought... I don't know why there would put a larger gauge wire for a ground that doesn't pass as much amperage.
I thought in the older decks it was ground and switched power on the 2-prong connector, and the 4-prong was for speakers?
I will get a pic of the front later for you guys, its a classic push button two knob. Don't wanna fry it. I took apart my dash and didn't find matching plugs.
So after looking at the deck closer, I think I may have it solved. The blue wire had a fuse holder I forgot to mention, so I believe thats the switched power. No need for constant power, theres nothing for the deck to remember. The white with black must be ground. I assume the small white is the backlight. I have seen the same radio without the 4th wire. It does have a side to side balance, so it runs 2 speakers. Should I assume the black with strips is positive and red negative? I may have to open it up inside
Ran some test wires. The 2 wire plus is power. Blue for + white for -. The black with tracers seem to be speaker + with the red being speaker -. White is for the backlight. I took it apart but couldn't trace the lines much. Did see a backlight bulb but it seems to be out. I will pop an LED in there later. I also need to make a downsizer panel since its narrower than single din. I have a nice chunk of stainless to make that from. Thanks for the tips guys. I will get a video and pics of it when its installed.
Got it installed and working. Made a face plate for it so it mounts in my single DIN stereo slot I made in the console. I need an antenna extension cord but it does reach. I offset it to the side to have a toggle switch operation the "keyed" power wire. Its how I usually install stereos.
I ended up wiring the red wire as speaker + and the white as speaker -. The black with tracers also grounded the speaker but didn't allow the balance mode to work. I probably need to fine tune that later but atleast it works.
I am telling you... House speakers... I am pretty sure that the solid red wire and white wire are you (+) and the black w/ white stripe and black w/ red stripe ones are your (-)... That's how you'll get your balance.
I checked the 4 wire plug with a voltmeter, got about 5 volts from the red. Nothing from the rest. Only got right side when i used red and black. got both sides working with red and white. just ran that to both sides. this is just for a couple months til i upgrade my alternater and can put in a real system.
