I got my truck 3 weeks ago. Drives fine, but when there is some uneven road it pulls either to left or right. When I had it align the guy told me to get all the front steering replace since I have 18's on. Raised it on stands and rock the wheels, but don't see much freeplay. Can replacing the steering damper help or maybe the alignment guy is right? I also notice some vibration when going 70mph. I remember when I got wheels for my 90 accord they came with hub centric. Check the wheel out and looks like there is gap between the center of the rim and the center hub. Looked on ebay, but non said for toyo pickup. Where and what is the correct hub centric for my 91 truck? Any info is greatly appreciated.
if it pulls on uneven roads its normal if you dont have power steering, i think. but just to be sure i would get the tie rod ends looked at and replace all worn out bushings and steering components.
If I recall correctly, the toyota trucks are lug centric, so that shouldn't matter. What offset are the wheels? If they center further out than the stock wheels, they will tend to cause some pull in the direction of the side that hits the bump or raised area of the road. That would be a matter of leverage. You can try a steering dampener, if the pull is cause by the wheels' offset, it will help some. Is there any play in the steering box?
if there is "little" play, replace the parts with play. If there's "zero" play, look elsewhere. bad anything (ball joints, tie rods, idler arm, steering box, bushings, bearings) will make it seem skittery. Bad shocks will too, along with wearing everything else out. As mentioned, if the offset doesn't put the scrub radius in the right spot it'll act really weird. The steering damper is there to band aid the problem of being a truck with parallelogram steering (idler, pitman, center link, etc). It isn't really needed except that a truck is more likely to show problems with the steering, so it makes them less apparent when they show up IE less complaints till the warranties up. replacing it is like changing the bandage on a wound.
I'll have the front end look at again. As for the offset of the wheels, not sure, but I do know that they are +40 or little more. The front R tire and rim rubs the strut bar and the inside side well. Back is about an inch from the leaf springs.
